Hulk Is To Blame for Turning His Son Into a Monster

Warning: spoilers ahead for Gamma Flight #2!

As the son of the Hulk, the being known as Skaar was one of Marvel’s strongest beings until his own father stole his power. Fathered by the Hulk during his exile on the planet Sakaar, Skaar’s mother was Caiera the Oldstrong, a powerful Sakaaran warrior. This superstrong parentage created a gamma-irradiated alien with incredible strength.

But when Hulk’s Doc Green persona took over, Skaar found himself on the receiving end of the good doctor’s quest to rid the world of gamma-powered living weapons, drained of his power in Hulk #7 by Gerry Duggan and Mark Bagley. Now, Skaar has returned in the pages of Gamma Flight by Al Ewing, Crystal Frasier, and Lan Medina, but the son of the Jade Giant is far from the hero he used to be.

After the gamma-mutate known as Stockpile terrorizes Austin in Gamma Flight #1, the titular team arrives to intervene – as does a mutated and gamma-powered Skaar. The battle continues in Gamma Flight #2, where Skaar effortlessly tears through Gamma Flight, as well as local police and even the United States’ new Hulkbuster division. Sent on behalf of Operation Green Spring – the program that created Stockpile and restored his gamma powers – the Son of Hulk managed not to kill any of his opponents, but it’s only a matter of time before Green Spring sends him to a point of no return. It’s clear from his words that Hulk is partly to blame for his transformation, as he screams, “Hulk couldn’t steal my birthright!”

Once upon a time, Skaar was a hero, and even one of the Avengers. But when Doc Green sapped his gamma powers, his whole life changed. As a Hulk/Oldstrong hybrid, Skaar was superstrong all the way down to his DNA. Though Hulk #7 seemingly ended with him adjusting to his new mortal life, there was no way to truly prepare him for the huge adjustments he would need to make.

Operation Green Spring’s commander, Emil Blonksy (the original Abomination), seems to have used this newfound vulnerability to radicalize the son of Hulk. Gamma Flight #2 sees the reveal that the victims of Operation Green Spring were originally brought onboard with false promises of enhanced powers, only to be brainwashed. By offering Skaar a chance to reclaim his birthright, they took advantage of the trauma left by his father’s crusade. In weakening his son and abandoning him in an unfamiliar world, Hulk made Skaar vulnerable to Green Spring’s lies and, eventually, their control.

Doc Green may have wanted to depower gamma-heroes for the good of the world, but instead, his actions have put the world and his own son in serious jeopardy. Now, Skaar is more of a monster than his father, the Hulk, ever was. The road to hell was paved with good intentions, but in attempting to rid the world of one blight, Hulk left Skaar open to the machinations of the amoral Abomination, giving Operation Green Spring a strong right hand and visiting even more trauma on a child who’s suffered enough of it to last a lifetime.
