Although ProRes is one of the big selling points with Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro models, you’ll need to be prepared for the storage requirements.

iPhone 13 Pro 4K ProRes Recording Uses A Gigabyte Every 10 Seconds

The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max have the ability to record video in Apple’s ProRes format and the quality will be amazing, but 4K resolution video consumes a staggering one gigabyte every ten seconds. Top-quality video is the milestone to reach now that smartphones have largely replaced the need for a point-and-shoot camera and, in some cases, rival the much larger and more expensive DSLR cameras.

Recording the best quality video is much more demanding than capturing a single photo since the same process has to happen 30 to 60 times per second for standard video. While slow-motion video captures up to 240 frames per second with any of the iPhone’s cameras, even the front-facing camera, resolution drops to 1080p in order to keep up with such a fast pace.

Apple’s ProRes is coming to the iPhone 13 Pro very soon, appearing in the latest iOS 15 beta, as noted by 9to5 Mac. ProRes is a very low-compression video format that dramatically reduces the artifacts and noise that might otherwise appear in a video using Apple’s usual high-efficiency video coding (HEVC). There are a few trade-offs that come with this demanding method of storing video. The most problematic might be the amount of storage used. An entire gigabyte is needed for just ten seconds of 4K resolution video when using ProRes. That means a 256 gigabyte iPhone 13 Pro, the minimum storage required to enable ProRes, is likely to be completely filled in less than 45 minutes. It’s unlikely to record that much at once unless shooting a live event uncut, but several short videos will add up quickly. Standard HEVC video is still great and should be the default for most videos. With HEVC, about a full day’s worth of video will fit in the same 256 gigabyte iPhone 13 Pro model, demonstrating how big of a difference this makes.

iPhone 13 Pro’s 1080p ProRes Explained

It’s a slightly different story when choosing to record ProRes video in 1080p resolution. This still provides good quality and was the standard for many years. On a smartphone, it might not be possible to see the difference between this and 4K. On a bigger screen, however, the lower resolution might be more noticeable. ProRes in 1080p is available for the 128 gigabyte iPhone 13 Pro models and consumes a gigabyte every 35 seconds, about 3.5 times less than 4K resolution. This means a little more than one hour can be recorded in this format on a 128 gigabyte iPhone 13 Pro model, which is still not much.

ProRes might be preferred by professionals but, for most users, it should be used sparingly. Besides the space used on the iPhone, transferring such a large amount of data will take time and it will need to be converted to a more standard format before uploading. For pro videographers, this is well-known and there are systems in place to handle this amount of throughput. For those new to ProRes, it might be a good idea to test with some shorter videos before committing to using this to record school plays or vacation videos.
