One of the most financially successful filmmakers of all time, and creator of franchises such as The Terminator and Avatar, James Cameron has amassed the kind of career and money most people can only dream of. For over forty years, he has made films that have perhaps changed cinema or helped shape the year they came out. Some of Cameron’s films have become iconic.

Cameron directed two of the five current films to have earned over $2 billion at the box office, with his movies grossing a lot more than that. The Canadian filmmaker has over twenty directing and forty producer credits, leading to unbelievable amounts of money being made. Here are James Cameron’s top 10 highest-grossing films that he either directed or produced according to Box Office Mojo.

10 POINT BREAK (1991) – $83,531,958 WORLDWIDE

Starring Keanu Reeves as the memorable Johnny Utah, Point Break is a massively entertaining action flick directed by Oscar winner Katherine Bigelow, written and produced by James Cameron. Reeves is great and the action delivers brilliantly.

The film made a nice bit of money too. From a $24,000,000 budget, the film managed $8,514,616 in its opening weekend, leading to a domestic total of $43,218,387. It did slightly worse internationally, grossing $40,313,571 upon its 1991 release, taking its worldwide total to $83,531,958.

9 THE ABYSS (1989) – $90,000,098 WORLDWIDE

Written and directed by Cameron, The Abyss is stuffed full of gorgeous visual effects. On top of that, though it is a brilliant thriller full of suspense and great entertainment, it showcased the very best of Cameron’s skills as a filmmaker and is fondly remembered by critics and audiences, even if it has aged.

With a big $70,000,000 budget, The Abyss only opened at $9,319,797 before its domestic total rose to $54,222,310 on its original release. A small domestic re-release four years after its 1989 debut then took that number to $54,461,047, which combined with the films international gross of $35,539,051, brings its worldwide total of $90,000,098.

8 SANCTUM (2011) – $108,609,310 WORLDWIDE

A film on the opposite end of the quality spectrum from The Abyss, Sanctum was produced by James Cameron. As is the case with a lot of Cameron films, directed or not, it looks brilliant and makes good use of modern tech, but the film overall is not great, with an uninteresting story and poor cast stemming from its underwhelming script.

The film had a budget over half the size of The Abyss in $30,000,000, getting a $9,447,930 opening weekend, gaining a $23,209,310 domestic gross and a much better $85,400,000 international gross, taking its worldwide total to $108,609,310.

7 ALIENS (1986) – $131,335,326 WORLDWIDE

Arguably the best of the Alien franchise, and the one that came before its downfall in quality, Aliens is a sci-fi great, written and directed by Cameron, who took the reins from Ridley Scott. With a phenomenal lead performance from Sigourney Weaver, the tense brilliance of the film shines and stands the test of time.

The film earned a $10,052,042 opening from an $18,000,000 budget, grossing a domestic total of $85,160,248. Internationally, Aliens’ original run grossed $45,900,000, a total that was increased with two re-releases in 1993 and 2015, taking the worldwide total to $131,335,326.

6 TERMINATOR: DARK FATE (2019) – $258,749,056 WORLDWIDE

Terminator: Dark Fate seemed to show that the world just was not interested in another Terminator entry. The James Cameron produced movie was the best since the original pair. While lacking the intensity or entertainment value of those early films, Dark Fate is well made and likable.

The film had a giant $185,000,000 budget, but only managed $29,033,832 in its opening weekend and failed to make its budget back at the end of its domestic run with only $62,074,270. The movie only managed to make its money back – on paper – from its international gross of $196,674,786, taking its worldwide total to $248,749,056.

5 TRUE LIES (1994) – $378,882,411 WORLDWIDE

Absurd entertainment, True Lies may not be exactly up to the high standards set by the James Cameron/Arnold Schwarzenegger combo, but the movie still has its place. True Lies is liked by a lot of people as the fun action flick that it is, with some good humor throughout.

The film kicked off its run with a $25,869,770 opening weekend, leading to a $146,282,411 domestic run during its 1994 release. Combined with its $232,600,000 international gross, True Lies managed a worldwide total of $378,882,411.

4 ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL (2019) – $404,852,543 WORLDWIDE

James Camerons 10 HighestGrossing Films (According To Box Office Mojo)

Alita: Battle Angel was released early in 2019 to mixed reviews from critics, citing an overstuffed plot that prioritized style over substance; however, it was generally well-received by audiences. The film does have its moments and, as is a common feature in Cameron-produced features, some beautiful effects.

The sci-fi flick opened to a $28,525,613 weekend, earning a domestic gross of $85,710,210. Earning $319,142,333, the film’s international gross was significantly better and served as Alita’s main source of revenue, taking the films to a worldwide total of $404,852,543 – all from a big $170,000,000 budget.

3 TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY (1991) – $520,884,847 WORLDWIDE

The debate will likely rage on for decades over which is better, Terminator or Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Arguably one of the finest action films of all time, Terminator 2 delivers in every department: Acton, iconography, thrills, Arnold, effects, and story.

Everything also clicked financially, with the film opening at $31,765,506 in 1991, going on to double its $102,000,000 budget with a $204,843,345 total, coupled with an international gross of $312,106,698.

Two subsequent re-releases in 2003 and 2017 earned Terminator 2 some extra cash, taking its overall worldwide total to $520,884,847.

2 TITANIC (1997) – $2,187,463,944 WORLDWIDE

James Camerons 10 HighestGrossing Films (According To Box Office Mojo)

The first-ever film to reach $1,000,000,000 (Jurassic Park was released earlier but did not gross over $1,000,000,000 until a 2013 re-release), Titanic is one of the most recognizable and iconic films of all time, launching Leonardo Di Caprio into superstardom and director James Cameron into history. A film which may be overly long, but still managed to capture a boatload of Oscars as well as the hearts – and money – of millions.

With a huge $200,000,000 budget – which seems not that much thanks to its gross – the film earned an opening weekend of $28,638,131, managing $600,788,188 domestically and $1,242,433,344 internationally during its original four-and-a-half month run. It was not until a 2012 re-release that grossed $57,884,114 domestically and $285,666,656 internationally that Titanic would surpass $2,000,000,000, reaching its worldwide total of $2,187,463,944.

1 AVATAR (2009) – $2,789,958,507 WORLDWIDE

One of the most expensive sci-fi films ever made, but the second-highest-grossing film of all time, Avatar may well beat Titanic to being the film James Cameron’s legacy rests upon, especially with multiple sequels incoming. The film is overly long and unengaging at multiple points, but its visual beauty and technological brilliance cannot be ignored.

The film only opened with a $77,025,481, but through word of mouth, a one month window earned the film a total domestic gross of $749,766,139. Internationally, the films initial run earned $1,994,090,161, taking its original release total to $2,743,856,300. Then through a 2010 re-release, the film grossed an extra $45,823,494 and then an additional $278,713 from a small 2011 re-release, making Avatar’s total worldwide gross $2,789,958,507.
