Vast universes with dense lore such as Stardew Valley are always filled to the brim with mysteries. In Pelican Town, there is some suspicion that Abigail’s father might not be Pierre, but rather the Wizard, based on some comments that her mother Caroline makes. Other mysteries ponder the identities of the elusive M. Jasper and Mona while others theorize if Mr. Qi is a stand-in or representative of the developer ConcernedApe himself.
Likewise, many players have questioned the meaning behind Jas’s dollhouse, which features a family gathered around a dinner table. Strangely, however, Stardew Valley’s description text for the dollhouse notes that the doll representing grandpa is “wedged under the table for some reason.” It’s never explained why this is the case or what it represents, including through conversations with Jas, so players have been left to theorize what it could mean, and one idea stands out among the rest.
Jas, Marnie, and Mayor Lewis’ Relationship
Jas is a child resident of Pelican Town who lives with her aunt Marnie and her godfather Shane rather than her parents, as they died of unknown causes. Nothing is known about Jas’s grandparents either, so it’s a bit odd that Jas would intentionally put the grandfather doll underneath the bed intentionally if it was meant to represent Jas’s biological grandfather.
This has led to Stardew Valley players believing that this may be a reference to Marnie’s (not-so) secretive relationship with Mayor Lewis. The first instance many players likely come across in discovering this is when Mayor Lewis requests players to find his purple shorts “discreetly.” The game clearly puts quotation marks around “shorts,” rotating that he’s actually speaking about his underwear, which can be found inside Marnie’s bedroom after increasing her affinity level. Another request from the Mayor asks for truffle oil, but says that its need is “none of your business,” implying is lewd use.
The simplest explanation for why Jas’s doll might be wedged under the bed is that it represents Mayor Lewis wedging himself underneath the bed. It seems like Lewis and Marnie are attempting to sneak around—the keyword here being “attempting” because they aren’t as sneaky as they might think. One instance allows players to catch them in the middle of it by shaking a bush in town at 12:40 AM.
It’s likely that Mayor Lewis attempted to hide under Marnie’s bed at some point when Jas entered her aunt’s room late at night or unexpectedly. However, children can be a lot smarter than adults give them credit for, and it’s possible that Jas has seen Mayor Lewis trying to hide under Marnie’s bed at some point. Taking it a step further, the tableau that Jas made in the dollhouse could represent an actual moment when Lewis was hiding under the bed while the family ate downstairs, trying not to be seen by them.
Otherwise, some players think that the grandpa doll may have some strange resemblance to the player’s grandpa seen at the beginning of the game lying in a bed. There are some theories out there that dictate the player might be a cousin of Jas or otherwise related somehow, but there’s no evidence to back this up. The most information about what Jas’s dollhouse could signify is purely circumstantial, but it’s possible that it’s another small hint toward Mayor Lewis and Marnie’s relationship.
On the other hand, it could mean nothing and simply be flavor text for the dollhouse. After all, children sometimes stick their toys in strange places without explanation, but what makes this case odd is how Stardew Valley specifically notes that it’s the grandfather doll, meaning that there was likely some intention behind it. But with still so much unknown about Jas’s family, it’s likely that this Stardew Valley mystery will remain unsolved.
Stardew Valley is out now for Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
