In the early 2010s, Jennifer Lawrence made her way from relative obscurity to the top of the film industry. The films she has appeared in have totaled over $6 billion in revenue and earned her a place on Time’s “100 most influential people in the world” list.

We’ve used IMDb to rank the main roles she has played in films since the start of her career. These are her 5 highest rated roles, along with her 5 lowest.

10 WORST: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (6.5)

Jennifer Lawrence Her 5 Best & 5 Worst Roles (According To IMDb)

The first thing to consider when introducing The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 as the first of Jennifer Lawrence’s five worst roles is that she hasn’t had that many roles in the first place.

As such, this score of 6.5 both isn’t a terrible rating, and isn’t that far from the first of her five ‘best’ films shown below. Anyway, this film certainly is the worst of the franchise, replacing the exciting and endearing Games with politics and a few rather annoying characters.

9 BEST: The Hunger Games (7.2)

Considering Katniss Everdeen is the highest-grossing action heroine of all time, it’s no surprise that The Hunger Games made it into the list. Lawrence’s portrayal of Katniss has been widely lauded in a franchise that has often been considered a slight disappointment in comparison to the novel that inspired it.

Katniss is a powerful badass who can wield a bow and arrow better than anyone, and quickly builds up enough respect from every human in the post-apocalyptic future to begin the response to the rule of a tyrannical government.

8 WORST: The Poker House (6.4)

The Poker House is directed by Lori Petty, who you may recognize from playing almost the exact same character in both Prison Break and Orange Is The New Black. It’s only Lawrence’s second role, but she managed to land one of the lead roles: 14-year old Agnes, one of three neglected sisters.

The film takes an artistic approach, using a low budget and a single-day setting to capture a claustrophobic atmosphere, but its limited release and average reviews have seen it slip away from notoriety.

7 BEST: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (7.5)

The second installment in the Hunger Games franchise is also the last time we saw characters actually taking part in the titular games. Under the evil rule of President Snow, the Games are played with participants who had previously won, thus culling almost all of their trophies, simply to fight Katniss’ response.

She plays the character with edginess, hard-headed action and moody sincerity, but with enough comedy and true emotion sprinkled over the top to keep her about as relatable as a teenage protagonist can be.

6 WORST: Dark Phoenix (5.8)

Considering there are about to be two X-Men films on the upper end of this list (spoiler alert) it seems weird to be placing a film from the franchise on the other end of the spectrum. However, if you’ve seen it, you’ll know why.

The film draws on its ensemble cast again, and of course, they live up to their talents, but in comparison to the previous films in the series, it was simply an incredible disappointment and an anticlimactic end for the characters.

5 BEST: Silver Linings Playbook (7.7)

Jennifer Lawrence Her 5 Best & 5 Worst Roles (According To IMDb)

In the same year in which she first brought Katniss Everdeen to the big-screen, Lawrence took on a role that was able to hit home far more than any fictional future full of cold-blooded killing ever could.

Starring alongside Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, Lawrence had a lot to live up to, but her portrayal of widow Tiffany Maxwell is in equal parts comedic as it is heartbreaking and emotional.

4 WORST: House At The End Of The Street (5.6)

In the year that saw Lawrence bring Katniss Everdeen to life and star in Silver Linings Playbook, we were also forced through House At The End Of The Street. With a title that takes that long to say, you can never expect particularly big things, but the film still managed to disappoint.

With Lawrence on the posters (and, to be fair, putting on a great performance) the film was a box office success, but certainly didn’t fare so well with critics.

3 BEST: X-Men: First Class (7.7)

Jennifer Lawrence Her 5 Best & 5 Worst Roles (According To IMDb)

Jennifer Lawrence made her first appearance in the Marvel universe through 2011’s X-Men: First Class. She plays Mystique, a character that requires her to be painted blue every time she appears on screen.

Given the fact that her character is a shapeshifter capable of mimicking both the look and voice of others, there are a surprising number of times in which Lawrence doesn’t actually play her own character. However, she pulls off the blue, menacing evil of her character’s natural state very well.

2 WORST: Serena (5.4)

A boring name for a boring film. Lawrence teams up with Bradley Cooper yet again for this drama, but it doesn’t create the same deep emotion as Silver Linings Playbook. In fact, the reason it only lands a 5.4 on IMDb is because it’s just so dull.

As with everything on this list, Lawrence’s performance was praised pretty much across the board, but with a strangely experimental filming style that doesn’t match the period setting of the film, and with a bland exposition of story and poorly explained twists, it just didn’t work.

1 BEST: X-Men: Days Of Future Past (8.0)

Often considered the best X-Men film, the seventh installment in the franchise allows Lawrence to interact directly with Huge Jackman’s Wolverine. Like most Marvel films, it features an incredibly impressive ensemble cast, and even then Lawrence’s performance stands out as exceptional.

Considering her most well-known character (Katniss) exists exclusively to bring balance and equality to the world through her good nature and caring persona, Lawrence is able to bring out basically the exact opposite end of the spectrum with remarkable depth.
