Legendary released a new TV spot for Pacific Rim Uprising. In 2013, writer-director Guillermo del Toro released Pacific Rim, a sci-fi blockbuster that featured massive robots – called Jaegers – piloted by drift compatible humans battling kaiju monsters from another dimension. Though the film ended with the remaining Jaeger pilots successfully closing the breach between Earth and the kaiju realm, suffering a number of losses along the way, the story of Pacific Rim will continue in the upcoming sequel. Del Toro stepped down as writer and director on the followup, leaving Steven S. DeKnight to direct Pacific Rim Uprising, though he did stay on as executive producer.

In front of the camera, Pacific Rim Uprising is a mix of returning stars – including Mako Mori as Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day as Dr. Newt Geiszler, and Burn Gorman as Dr. Hermann Gottlieb – and a new generation of heroes. This new generation will be led by John Boyega’s Jake Pentecost, the son of Pacific Rim hero Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), who sacrificed himself in the climactic battle of del Toro’s film. Additionally, Scott Eastwood’s Nate Lambert will work with Jake to pilot a new generation of Jaegers to battle even more kaiju and save the world – again.

After Boyega teased fans about a new Pacific Rim Uprising trailer, Legendary unveiled the new teaser during the Jacksonville Jaguars vs. New England Patriots football game. The new trailer for Pacific Rim Uprising features some humor from Day’s Newt and plenty of mech vs kaiju action as Boyega and Eastwood’s characters join the Jaeger uprising to save their planet.

In addition to Boyega, Eastwood, and the returning Pacific Rim actors, Pacific Rim Uprising stars newcomer Cailee Spaeny as Amara Namani, Kong: Skull Island’s Jing Tian as Liwan Shao, The Belko Experiment’s Adria Arjona as Jules Reyes, Ip Man 3’s Zhang Jin as Marshal Quan, Diary of a Wimpy Kid’s Karan Brar as Suresh, and The Spy Who Dumped Me’s Ivanna Sakhno as Vik. Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam was unable to return for the sequel as he had a previous commitment to another project.

With a March 2018 release date, Pacific Rim Uprising will debut nearly five years after del Toro’s film. The sequel was stalled for many years, likely because Pacific Rim grossed only $411 million at the global box office on a reported budget of $190 million, and earned middling reviews from critics – though it did inspire a dedicated fan base. It’s likely due to that dedicated fan base, and del Toro’s own work as executive producer, that convinced Legendary to move forward with the Pacific Rim sequel. Now, fans excited for Pacific Rim Uprising have gotten another chance to see what to expect from DeKnight’s sequel ahead of the film’s release in March.
