My Little Pony: A New Generation takes place many years after the Friendship Is Magic series, revealing how the land of Equestria is now ruled by fear and divided between Earth ponies, unicorns, and pegasi. The Netflix film, which arrived on the streaming platform on September 24, follows Earth pony Sunny Starscout (Vanessa Hudgens, The Princess Switch) and unicorn Izzy Moonbow (Kimiko Glenn, DuckTales) on their quest to discover what happened to magic.

The film is jam-packed with tunes to bop to, either sung by the characters or playing over credits. Tiktok’s #1 music artist Johnny Orlando took part in the proceedings with the upbeat dance number “It’s Alright,” which marks his first time participating in a movie soundtrack.

Orlando spoke to Screen Rant about recording the track, his passion for music in general, and what steps he hopes to take next in his career.

Screen Rant: I was bopping to the whole soundtrack of My Little Pony: Next Generation when I watched it. How were you approached to record “It’s Alright” for the film, and what made you want to sing for the world of Equestria?

Johnny Orlando: I think it was an email. It came, actually, through the president of my label in Canada. He gave us a call and he was like, “Listen, this is a really cool opportunity,” and he laid everything out. After that, I was like, “Yeah, for sure. Let’s do it.”

Having a song in a movie’s always been a dream of mine. After that, we said, ‘Yes, let’s do it.” And then everything happened super quickly.

What was that recording process like? What I love about My Little Pony is the positive message packaged in a really fun way about coming together and overcoming differences. The song is not specifically about that, but it is very positive. What message did you hope to convey with your crooning?

Johnny Orlando: When I heard the song for the first time, I just started moving. That’s what it’s about for me. It’s a really fun song, and there’s nothing heavy about it at all.

In my projects, I like to talk about what’s going on in my life. My life isn’t always as happy as the world of Equestria. But for this kind of thing, I just wanted it to be fun for people to listen to.

You said that you wanted to do a movie soundtrack. How else do you want to branch out creatively speaking, or what do you hope will be next for you?

Johnny Orlando: I would do anything. I always say that, right now, I’m very much music-focused. But once the ball really gets rolling over on the music side, I think that’s when you can start to [branch out].

And for me, it’s more about branding and being able to establish myself as an artist. Because I started on social media, there are still people like, “Oh, he’s not an artist, whatever.” I have to get that nailed down first, and then I can really branch out into acting, design, clothing, art…

When you are deciding what music to put out next or working with producers, what is it that you want in your brand as an artist?

Johnny Orlando: I think honesty is the biggest thing for me. I started on social media, yes, but I started when I was eight years old. So, it’s a bit different than how a lot of artists that we see today [start].

I really genuinely love music and have a passion for it, and it’s one of the only ways that I can really get my feelings across. I’m all about honesty and music; it’s really the only way that I know how to talk about things.

Finally: if you watch my little pony, do you have a favorite pony? And if you don’t, what is your childhood comfort show of choice?

Johnny Orlando: I will definitely be watching this movie. I can’t say that I’ve seen My Little Pony in the past, but my sister loved it when she was younger.

I really loved Good Luck Charlie. I loved Disney shows, but I don’t watch too much TV, especially after I started YouTube. I was just on YouTube all the time looking at singing videos and other people that were doing the same thing that I was, so I kind of stayed away from the TV route.
