Justice Leagues Steppenwolf Fix Is (Partly) Why The Snyder Cut Is Rated R

A new clip of Steppenwolf battling Amazons partially shows why Zack Snyder’s Justice League is rated R. To call the story of the Snyder Cut historic would be the epitome of an understatement, Justice League having originally released into theaters stitched together from hasty reshoots and largely reworked Zack Snyder footage following his departure from the movie. After an extended push by fans, the Snyder Cut will finally debut on HBO Max on March 18th, with an R-rating that can be partly attributed to its major antagonist.

Snyder has previously stated his expectation that the film would be rated R, and has offered tidbits about the film that include Batman dropping an F-bomb. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had an F-bomb in its R-rated Ultimate Edition, but this alone wouldn’t account for the Snyder Cut’s R-rating, since PG-13 movies can get away with at least one. In this regard, Snyder’s clip of Steppenwolf offers a clearer picture of why the Snyder Cut will be rated-R.

The clip shows Steppenwolf battling the Amazons in Themyscira, with one Amazon dying brutally when Steppenwolf chops her down with his axe. With the size of the 300-esque blood spurt this causes, it shows quite clearly that the Snyder Cut was destined to carry an R. Other areas of the movie, such as the death of Silas Stone seen in the trailer, also show that Snyder pulled no punches from the usual intensity associated with his movies.

Though Justice League was massively reshot from the movie Zack Snyder had made, the changes to Steppenwolf began long before his departure. Following Batman v Superman’s divisive response, elements such as the “scary idea” of Darkseid murdering Lois Lane in the Batcave (thereby making Superman susceptible to the Anti-Life Equation’s influence) were removed in a script rewrite. Steppenwolf himself was also softened a great deal in both his look and his all-around menace, but that’s clearly a thing of the past now.

Prior to the new clip’s release, Snyder had also shed light on how the film will present Steppenwolf, saying that “He literally doesn’t care” with respect to the villain’s perspective on humans. From the point of view of Snyder’s Steppenwolf, slaughtering humans is no different than killing insects, and his complete lack of empathy is quite apparent in the clip. On top of these factors, Steppenwolf’s spiked, silver battle armor presents him as a fearsome, Xenomorph-like alien villain, while a snippet of the black-suited Superman uppercutting a leaping Steppenwolf in the trailer also shows the villain as an overall far more formidable fighter, as well.

All things considered, Steppenwolf already looks like one of the most improved aspects of Justice League made by the Snyder Cut. A genuinely scary alien warrior and a merciless butcher on the battlefield, Steppenwolf also helps highlight why Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be debuting with an R-rating. With Steppenwolf being such a monstrous adversary for the League to oppose, one can only imagine how ruthless the movie’s history lesson is going to show Darkseid to be.
