Kazs Limp In Shadow & Bone Explained What Happened To His Leg

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Shadow and Bone season 1 and the Six of Crows duology.

Kaz Brekker is one of the main characters of Shadow and Bone, but the show’s first season doesn’t explain why the master thief walks with a limp. In author Leigh Bardugo’s novels, Kaz’s backstory is slowly revealed through Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom. Netflix’s Shadow and Bone adaptation is likely to tackle the stories of those books in future seasons, which means that Kaz’s origin story, and the cause of his leg injury, will probably be similar in the show.

A native of the island nation of Kerch, Kaz came to Ketterdam with his older brother Jordie when he was still a young boy. Through a series of unfortunate events, the two wound up poor and starving, living on the streets, eventually both contracting the Queen’s Lady Plague. Jordie died of the disease, but Kaz managed to survive, later joining a gang called the Dregs (also known as the Crows) to try to make a way for himself in the world. Kaz quickly rose through the ranks, establishing himself as one of Ketterdam’s most capable criminals and gaining widespread respect through the underworld.

In the books that Shadow and Bone is based on, Kaz’s limp comes from an early job he pulled for the Dregs. While making his getaway, Kaz jumped from a rooftop and came down hard on his leg, breaking it instantly. Because the leg wasn’t set properly, the injury never fully healed, and Kaz had a crow’s head cane crafted by a Fabrikator to help him walk. Somedays the pain in his leg is less severe than others, but Kaz always lives with the physical remembrance of the fall.

Thematically, Kaz’s limp is used as a metaphor in the books for his broader character. To quote Six of Crows, “It became a declaration. There was no part of him that was not broken, that had not healed wrong, and there was no part of him that was not stronger for having been broken.” At one point in the story, Kaz even rejects the option to have his leg healed, showing that he holds the limp as a part of himself.

Bardugo has also said that Kaz’s limp was inspired by her own osteonecrosis – a degenerative bone condition. The author occasionally walks with a cane, and subsequently incorporated one into Kaz’s character. It’s unclear at this point if Kaz’s injury will be exactly the same in the show as it is in the novels, but it’s likely. Carter has already done a stellar job with the character in Shadow and Bone season 1, and it should be fun to see him continue in the role, whatever it brings.
