Kingdom Hearts Why Soras Weapon Is A Keyblade

Kingdom Hearts was first released in 2002 on the PlayStation 2 and had a unique premise of combining Disney with Final Fantasy characters. Throughout nearly twenty years since its initial release, the series added multiple games into the long-running franchise. As the story continues to expand, the Keyblade remains an important weapon that drives the narrative forward. But what’s the significance of the Keyblade in the story, and why does Sora use it on his journey?

Sora is the main protagonist in Kingdom Hearts who travels to different worlds searching for his lost friends Riku and Kairi. On his adventures, Sora needs a way to defeat enemies associated with the darkness, an antagonistic force in the series, including enemies known as Heartless and Nobodies. This is what leads him to possess the Keyblade. The Keyblade is a mysterious weapon that has the power to eliminate the dark creatures along with the ability to lock or unlock the Keyholes that connects the multiple worlds of Kingdom Hearts together.

The ultimate purpose for closing or opening pathways to worlds is because many villains in Kingdom Hearts aim to destroy them. In the first game, Sora needs the Keyblade to lock the different worlds in order to stop the Heartless from invading. In Kingdom Hearts 2, Sora has to open new pathways to each individual area to confront the Nobodies. As more prequels and sequel games of the series released, many other Keyblade wielders like Sora appeared.

Why Sora Is Special In Kingdom Hearts

Among the countless Keyblade users in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, Sora is special in comparison to the rest. Unlike the others, Sora was not originally chosen to wield the Keyblade. His childhood friend Riku was the destined Keyblade Master, but because Riku was influenced and corrupted by darkness, the Keyblade then chose Sora due to the strength of his heart. Similar to the Keyblade connecting worlds, Sora has the ability to connect people’s hearts (souls) granting him unique powers.

This power was seen in multiple Kingdom Hearts games, which allowed Sora to use his Keyblade to save several characters from the darkness – even from death – within the series. The Keyblade is more than just a weapon for him to use in battle. Sora’s weapon is the Keyblade likely for the simple reason that it’s a symbol of who he is as a character. Sora is a hero of the franchise who can unlock and connect people’s hearts just like a key that can unlock a door and connect worlds.
