Larry David has a message for conservative fans who feel alienated after the MAGA hat episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. After co-creating the classic sitcom Seinfeld in the 1990s, David hit another comedy home run when Curb debuted on HBO in 2000.

Starring David as a comically exaggerated version of himself, Curb has now run for ten seasons spread out over twenty years, with season 10 currently playing out. As expected, the tenth season of the acclaimed show features the same acerbic wit as always, with David cast in the role of the obnoxious pot-stirrer and endlessly nit-picky enforcer of social etiquette. Indeed, season 10 has charged ahead hard with storylines tackling everything from the #MeToo movement to the current divide between liberals and conservatives in America, giving the season even more of a political edge than usual.

Anyone who is a fan of David knows which side of the political aisle he lands on, so it should come as no real surprise that he took on the phenomenon of the MAGA hat and all it represents to people who land on the liberal side of things in the season’s debut episode, to winning comedic effect. However, some Donald Trump supporters have expressed anger at what they perceive as mockery and are off the Curb bandwagon. In an interview with YES Network host Michael Kay at the 92Y in New York back in January, David responded to conservatives who will no longer watch Curb after the MAGA hat episode and had a very blunt message for them: “Go. Go and alienate. You have my blessing. No, I could give a f–k.” See the hilarious clip in the space below (via Jimmy Traina):

In the episode in question, David wishes to get out of a dinner with a man he finds obnoxious, and comes up with the brilliant idea of wearing a red MAGA hat to the restaurant. As intended, the instant social stigma attached to the hat (the show of course is set in super-liberal Los Angeles) draws disapproving looks from the other patrons and makes David’s unwanted dinner companion immediately leave. Now realizing the power of the hat, David begins wearing it everywhere, relishing in being left utterly alone. In the joke’s punchline, David dons the hat after accidentally cutting off a tough-looking biker in traffic, and is let off with a warning by the motorcycle riding Trump supporter (a moment Trump himself posted to Twitter without context).

Of course, the whole MAGA hat bit is less about President Trump directly and more about peoples’ over-reaction to the sight of the hat, a joke that is squarely in line with the show’s consistent point-of-view on the social pitfalls everyone faces in modern life. But naturally, in the current polarized political climate, the fact of David seemingly picking on conservatives is enough to cause a backlash. It’s clear though that David doesn’t care about the input of critics of any political stripe when it comes to Curb Your Enthusiasm and its unique and still very effective brand of satiric humor.
