Lex Luthor Returns To DC With His Greatest Flex Ever

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Superman: Son of Kal-El Annual #1

One of Superman’s greatest rivals, Lex Luthor has just returned to Metropolis with a major flex in DC’s annual issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El. With the original Superman having left Earth indefinitely to fight Mongul and liberate War World, his son Jon has taken over as Earth’s Man of Steel. However, it seems as though the changing of the Kryptonian guard has encouraged Lex Luthor to reclaim his seat of power in one of DC’s most prominent cities, using his reputation to his advantage with an epic power move.

In past Superman comics set in DC’s Infinite Frontier, Lex Luthor had largely been absent as the Man of Steel’s focus was primarily on gearing up to face Mongul while Jon prepared to step into his father’s shoes. Furthermore, Lex Luthor played a major role in Death Metal, the major crisis that preceded Infinite Frontier as he had been replaced as Perpetua’s second in command by the Batman Who Laughs, potentially dooming the entire multiverse. As a result, it made sense for Lex-centric stories to take a back seat.

That being said, Lex Luthor is ready to take back control in Superman: Son of Kal-El Annual #1 from writer Tom Taylor with artists Steve Pugh, Clayton Henry, and Steve Buccellato. While several crime bosses had filled the power vacuum Luthor left behind, the brilliant villain came up with a genius means of reasserting his dominance. Sending each of his competitors’ seemingly empty boxes with recordings, Luthor claims that each box contained a microscopic nanite that immediately entered each criminal’s brain, capable of killing them should they not comply with Lex’s demands. However, Lex Luthor admits that it’s possible he simply sent empty boxes. Either way, none of Luthor’s rivals are willing to take the chance given his reputation.

This is the ultimate power move from Lex, and it perfectly shows that the reputation he’s earned over the years has now become his greatest weapon. It’s almost more evil and cunning if he didn’t send the nanites, meaning Lex just secured 1.7 billion dollars from each of his rivals and established himself as their superior once again using nothing more than some empty boxes and a handful of words. Not only that, but Lex wastes no time buying the tallest building in Metropolis and putting his name on it (much to the irritation of the new Superman).

Despite Jon and Luthor’s conversation later on in the issue where Jon attempts to get Lex to think about saving the world, Luthor’s default has always been to look inward. Even in his most altruistic moments, it’s all about optics and making himself look good or getting some sort of benefit more often than not. Regardless, Lex Luthor’s return to Metropolis is absolutely perfect and certainly one of his most dastardly flexes of all time. After all, there’s a reason he’s the top dog when it comes to Superman villains in DC Comics, and he certainly proves it in this new annual issue.
