Lightyear Is Fixing Toy Story 4s Buzz Failure

Lightyear appears to be on a mission to fix Buzz Lightyear’s story, which Toy Story 4 pushed to the sidelines. The upcoming Toy Story prequel is nothing like its Pixar predecessors. Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter called the new movie the “definitive origin story of the original Buzz Lightyear,” making it clear that Lightyear isn’t about the Buzz Lightyear toy. Instead, it’s about the human Space Ranger that inspired the toy. Showing how different the film will be, the movie recasts Buzz Lightyear’s part, having Chris Evans play the character instead of Tim Allen, who voices the toy version of Buzz.

Toy Story 4 changed the trajectory of the franchise. After three films of Woody (Tom Hanks) doing everything he can to be there for kids, the character ultimately goes his own way in the 2019 movie. In the film, Woody reunites with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), his former love, and decides to become a lost toy, letting Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the gang go off with Bonnie (Madeleine McGraw) and her family. Though the message is somewhat different than the previous films, Toy Story 4 was still a success at the box office, taking in more than $1 billion worldwide.

Unlike Toy Story 4, Lightyear is looking to put a spotlight on Buzz. The first trailer for the film was a drastic departure from the Toy Story franchise. The Lightyear teaser showcases a surprisingly emotional tone, with images of Buzz Lightyear flying through space and going on missions all set to a stirring rendition of David Bowie’s song “Starman.” Considering Toy Story 4’s portrayal of Buzz, the Lightyear trailer is somewhat of a shock, which may be precisely what Pixar intended.

Pixar’s Lightyear is fixing where Toy Story 4 failed the character. In a bizarre move, Toy Story 4 appears to dumb down Buzz Lightyear. One of the film’s running jokes is that Buzz thinks his toy voice box is his inner voice. While moments of Buzz pressing his voice buttons for advice provide fun, they also seem to ignore three previous movies of character development. After all, Buzz has one of the most interesting arcs in the Toy Story franchise. In a memorable Toy Story 2 scene, Tim Allen’s Buzz Lightyear even grumbles, “Tell me I wasn’t this deluded,” while facing off against another Buzz Lightyear that doesn’t understand he’s a toy. By featuring a human version of the character, Lightyear can showcase a more intelligent Buzz and honor the character’s past without undermining it.

Above all, Lightyear is finally making Buzz the focus of the story. In Toy Story 4, Buzz is more of an afterthought. He only appears briefly, and when he does, it’s to be the butt of the joke. While that story ultimately belongs to Woody, Lightyear is all about Buzz. The first Lightyear trailer immediately revealed that the movie would show a new side to the character, and it’s clear Pixar recognizes that their Starman is a star.
