Switch owners who missed out on Loop Hero earlier this year are in luck, as Nintendo announced a release date for the Devlover Digital-published indie during the Indie World stream earlier today. Developed by Russian team Four Quarters, Loop Hero took the PC gaming world by storm early in 2021 thanks to its novel combination of RPG sensibilities and roguelike elements. Later this year, the game ventures onto consoles for the first time with a Nintendo Switch release that lets players bring the game’s recursive loops on the go.

Loop Hero is all about building and rebuilding a fantasy kingdom that’s destined to reset over and over. As is the case with most roguelikes, players gain power as they finish runs, both through learning how the mechanics interact with each other and by unlocking new items that keep the variety high. Loop Hero also takes inspiration from clicker games, meaning that players only really have control over placing buildings and patches of land on the field. Building out the map in a certain way can lead to synergies that provide greater than average progress, and the true appeal in Loop Hero is learning all of those systems through trial and error.

As seen in a new trailer from Devolver Digital that premiered during this morning’s Indie World presentation, players will be able to loop over and over once again on Nintendo Switch this holiday. The trailer highlights the automatic combat and card collecting that’s key to Loop Hero’s success as well as zoomed-in moments between the titular hero and the skull-faced lich he’s fated to fight over and over. The dialogue between them gets meta as the lich explains the game’s Nintendo launch. The trailer doesn’t specify whether the game will hit Xbox or PlayStation platforms, but it’s certainly not out of the question considering the game’s popularity.

Loop Hero’s Switch debut wasn’t the only surprise that came as a part of the Indie World presentation. Those looking for new indie titles to enjoy on Switch got a trio of releases today, including Boyfriend Dungeon, Garden Story, and the long-awaited Axiom Verge 2. Established games like Slime Rancher and Curious Expedition 2 also saw release on Nintendo’s hybrid console for the first time after premiering on PC and other consoles first. The entire presentation ended with a look at Eastward, a beautiful pixel-art adventure coming from Chucklefish next month to Switch as a timed console exclusive.

While the Nintendo Switch’s versatility makes it an ideal home for a lot of games, Loop Hero and its short runs really fit the bill for anyone on the go. In fact, while an Xbox or PlayStation version may seem like the next logical step for the latest indie hit from Devolver Digital, it’s just as likely that Loop Hero ends up on mobile devices. Its simple card-based gameplay would adapt pretty well to a touchscreen device, even if it would need to be in landscape mode. Either way, Loop Hero will likely find an ideal home on Nintendo Switch consoles, and fans of the game should enjoy the chance to take it on the go.
