In The Lord of the Rings series, there are many fascinating magical creatures. Here are some of the coolest ones fans forget about.

In The Lord of the Rings series, and the other adjacent series such as The Hobbit, there are many fascinating magical creatures. Many of these creatures are rather dangerous such as orcs and dragons while others are much more benevolent.
While people often remember the more obvious creatures and monsters from the series like Shelob, there are many others from the world of Middle-Earth that people forget about or have never even heard of. Here are some of the coolest creatures from the Middle-Earth lore.
10 Boar of Everholt
Some of the creatures from the world of Middle-Earth are only mentioned in passing. The Board of Everholt is one of these. This was a monstrous board that lived near the feet of the White Mountains.
It was somewhat of a menace during the Third Age, and it was finally killed by Folca, a King of Rohan, who also died in the process. While this is an interesting historical moment, the board was mostly just a giant version of boars we have in our own world.
9 Wargs
Wargs aren’t higher on this list because of the fact that they are somewhat memorable and used in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. Wargs were originally a strange breed of wolves found in the Misty Mountains, they were then used by goblins and orcs as steeds.
These wolves are rather terrifying, but in most of the lore, they aren’t necessarily evil themselves but are just used for evil deeds by their owners.
8 Mumakil
The mumakil, or oliphaunts, are creatures that are featured in the movies. While they might not be the most talked-about creature from the series, they were hard to forget.
These animals were huge elephants that were used as steeds in battle by the Hardrim. While they don’t seem to have been magical in any way, their giant size made them formidable and dangerous in a battle situation. They were able to crush and kill many people and horses during the Battle of Pelennor Fields.
7 Turtle-fish
The turtle-fish are a more obscure creature that’s only mentioned in passing in The Hobbit. However, the idea of these creatures is rather fascinating and cool. In the tale about them from The Hobbit, the turtle-fish were a legendary kind of sea monster that was known to drown sailors.
These creatures looked to travelers on the sea like islands, and the last of their kind was called Fastitocalon. Tolkien seemed to draw inspiration for this creature from Old English legends, but the idea of giant turtles originated from Eastern myths.
6 Carcharoth
Many people might not realize that werewolves actually exist in the lore of Middle-Earth. Carcharoth was a werewolf who was alive during the First Age. He wasn’t the only one, however, as he was descended by Draugluin, the first werewolf who was created by Morgoth.
Morgoth created werewolves by taking a wolf and placing an evil spirit inside of it. Carcharoth was raised by Morgoth and grew to a large size. This is the wolf that Beren encountered and that bit off his hand and wrist.
5 Barrow-wights
Barrow-wights are an evil creature that Frodo and the other hobbits encounter in the book version of The Fellowship of the Ring. While they weren’t included in the movie version, they are a rather cool and terrifying creature. These barrow-wights could shape-shift, and they were similar in some ways to Wraiths.
They could be found in dark, remote places of Eriador, and the hobbits in the back encountered them in the Barrow-downs where they almost died.
4 Badger-folk
The badger-folk are other creatures from Middle-Earth lore that many people don’t know about. This is another race of animal that was mentioned briefly in the books thought Hobbit folklore.
These badger-folk lived in holes and burrows between the Old Forest and the Barrow-downs. They were able to talk and were sentient, intelligent beings. The leader of the badger-folk, Badger-brock, was actually captured by Tom Bombadil at one point.
3 Watcher in the Water
The watcher in the water is another monster that is featured in the movies, but it’s still rather cool and mysterious. This creature seems to have been inspired by similar monsters in myth such as the Kraken.
It appears in Lord of the Rings outside of the Mines of Moria, and it’s attracted to the Ring which leads it to attack the Fellowship. Tolkien never gave the watcher in the water a proper name. It’s only clear that it is some sort of ancient beast that was bothered when the dwarves of Moria mined too deep.
2 Glaurung the Great Worm
There are many large and terrifying dragons in the world of Middle-Earth. While Smaug might have been a formidable foe, he was rather small compared to many of his dragon relatives.
The largest and scariest dragon of all in the Middle-Earth lore is Glaurun the Great Worm. This dragon was made by Morgoth in Angband before being released upon the world. However, even Morgoth couldn’t control him and his ability to cast spells and control minds, so he was cast back into prison in Angband.
1 The Ungoliant
While a giant, father of dragons is really cool and also scary, there are many giant dragons in fantasy stories across the ages. So, in this way Glaurung isn’t the most unique of Tolkien’s creatures.
The Ungoliant is a creature that inspires almost as much fear as a dragon and that has an interesting place in the lore. Ungoliant is the mother of spiders, including Shelob, and was said to be made out of “pure darkness.” She would literally eat light. Ungoliant wasn’t made by Melkor(Morgoth), but she did become his ally. Her appetite grew so large, as did her size, that in the end she actually ate herself.
