Lord of the Rings How Aragorn Is Distantly Related To Arwen

Aragorn and Arwen are star-crossed lovers in The Lord of the Rings, but the pair also have a familial connection. Since the youngster’s royal heritage put him at risk from Sauron’s minions, Aragorn grew up among the elves of Rivendell. There, he fell in love with Arwen, the daughter of Rivendell’s Lord Elrond. After Aragorn grew into a man, those feelings were reciprocated, and Arwen promised herself to the mortal heir instead of following her kind across the sea. Though Aragorn and Arwen’s love is apparent in The Lord of the Rings, their relationship doesn’t fully blossom until after the War of the Ring, where King and Queen finally stand side by side at Aragorn’s coronation.

Aragorn’s closeness to the elves is unusual for a man in The Lord of the Rings, but thousands of years prior, the two races associated more frequently, with selected men of noble houses living freely in the elven realms. One such lucky human was Tuor of House Hador – a great warrior who spent his childhood in elven company, but it was while dwelling in Gondolin as an adult that (similarly to Aragorn) Tuor fell in love with the King’s daughter. The human Tuor and elf Idril conceived a half-elven child called Eärendil, who in turn went on to have two boys of mixed heritage, and this is where the Aragorn-Arwen connection begins.

Eärendil’s children were Elrond (he of Lord of the Rings fame) and Elros, with both sons sharing the lineages of elf and man. After the war against Morgoth, however, Elrond and Elros were made to choose between their two bloodlines. Elrond opted to follow the eleven path, while Elros ruled over men as the first King of Númenór. Now possessing the elves’ trademark immortality, Elrond lived until the events of The Lord of the Rings, with his daughter Arwen born during the interim. Meanwhile, Elros began a line of kings that weathered war, the destruction of Númenór, and total anonymity to survive until Sauron’s return in The Lord of the Rings. The direct descendant of Elros is Aragorn.

In terms of genealogy, Elros would be Aragorn’s great grandfather with about 60 “greats.” This makes Elrond Aragorn’s great, great, etc. uncle, and since Arwen is the Lord of Rivendell’s daughter, she and Aragorn are first cousins many times removed. Understandably, this connection is downplayed in The Lord of the Rings (Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy especially), but Aragorn and Arwen were aware of their distantly shared heritage. The first time a young Aragorn claps eyes on Arwen and falls for her beauty, as documented in Tolkien’s appendices, he introduces himself as the heir of Isildur, to which Arwen replies “then we are kin from afar.”

To the reader (or viewer), the idea of Aragorn and Arwen being lovers, despite knowing their distantly shared bloodline, might come across as somewhat icky. However, the separation of many generations means The Lord of the Rings’ second biggest love story can be enjoyed without the shadow of shame that would hang over Aragorn and Arwen if they were related more closely.

This is certainly the view taken in Middle-earth. After falling in love with the elf maiden, Aragorn confides in his mother, Gilraen. Although she tries to warn the love-struck prince away from Elrond’s daughter, Aragorn’s mother also stresses that any ancestry between themselves and the elves was “long ago and in another age of this world.” Gilraen also emphasizes how family relations were effectively over the moment Elrond chose elves and Elros chose men. Nevertheless, it’s a fascinating wrinkle of the Lord of the Rings world that Eärendil’s bloodline converges after so many years, and that in the vast Lord of the Rings world, these two distant relatives would choose each other despite hailing from different races.
