With the holiday season well on its way, Love Actually is, once again, sure to be watched by many as part of their Christmas traditions. The film focuses on the ups and downs of a variety of storylines which include romance, friendships, and family ties.

Whilst some of these connections get their happy endings, the movie doesn’t shy away from the reality of heartache. The sadder moments don’t detract from the movie being a feel-good film, with a plethora of heartwarming (and sometimes corny) scenarios leading the core theme.

Sam

Aside from mature relationships, Love Actually includes the trials and tribulations of young love. Sam sat with his stepdad, Daniel, and explained how the girl he met at school is the one for him. Daniel showed concern, and let Sam know that there isn’t necessarily just one person for everyone. However, as Sam states, there is for him, just as there was for his mother and Daniel.

Watching the young boy open his heart to the prospect of love, comparing it to the relationship of his late mother, and Daniel and feeling convinced that there is no one else on the planet for him, is one of the sweetest moments in Love Actually.

David

As Prime Minister, David has a lot more work-related issues at hand than just his love life. However, after the U.S. President visits on official business, it seemed that the two could sometimes overlap. Natalie and David began to form a bond, which was swiftly disrupted by the President making advances towards her.

Speaking at a conference, David revealed how he thought that the U.S. and Britain were creating a bad relationship. Whilst speaking about the two countries, it was evident that he was also referring to the disappointment he felt about seeing Natalie and the President together. The lovestruck Prime Minister was unable to get her off his mind, (even when giving an important speech,) affirming that Natalie was of significance in his life.

Sarah

Sarah and Karl came so close to being together and yet never managed to properly get there. After a work Christmas party, they found themselves back at Sarah’s flat and began to share an intimate moment. Unfortunately, they were interrupted by phone calls from Sarah’s brother, who was unwell and relied on her a lot.

Back at work, the pair briefly crossed paths again as Karl walked past. As he leaves, Sarah becomes frustrated and emotional, before another phone call from her brother. Without hesitation, she answers and acts as if she is completely fine. The love she has for her brother is beyond compare, proving it’s not only romantic relationships that can warm the heart.

Judy

Judy and John met in the most unusual way: as body doubles on a film set. They found themselves in extremely compromising and awkward positions, but still managed to spark a liking for one another.

After a date, John walked Judy to her door and she initiated a kiss between them. If the cheesy words she followed up with had been said by almost any other character, viewers might’ve been reaching for a vomit bucket. But somehow, the likable couples’ innocence and shyness made the whole exchange a joy to see and them one of the best couples in Love Actually.

Rufus

What is Christmas without jolliness and mystery? Although a minor supporting character in Love Actually, Rufus is committed to his job in the festive season, bringing a sense of magic.

After seeming to appear from nowhere, he assisted Harry when he was buying a necklace. With nothing less than great customer service and pure Christmas spirit, Rufus proceeded in packaging the item. His utter conviction that the wrapping of the gift is every bit as essential as the gift itself, is truly lovely, knowing it’s the pleasure in the small things that really embodies the Christmas spirit.

Juliet

Before learning the real reason for Mark’s standoffish behavior towards Juliet, he comes across as rude. Yet, Juliet has no intention of giving up, in an effort to form a friendship with her new husband’s close friend. With Peter’s best interests at heart, she turns up at Mark’s house unannounced, Banoffee pie in hand.

She tries to talk him round, admitting that she’s aware he hasn’t ever warmed to her. Even so, Juliet leaves her pride at the door and attempts to convince Mark that they could be friends because she doesn’t want to come between them, but is fixated on making her husband happy.

Billy

Living the rock ‘n roll lifestyle, Billy mixes in the circles of high flyers like Elton John. His manager, Joe, remains in the shadow of Billy, but doesn’t falter from his side.

Upon learning that Billy’s Christmas cover single reached number one, he attended a star-studded party to celebrate, leaving his manager behind. Later in the night, much to Joe’s surprise, Billy turned up at his house, admitting how he felt. The fact that Billy chose his manager over a grand party made for a perfect ending to Joe’s Christmas, knowing his loyalty didn’t go unnoticed.

Jamie

The words themselves might not be so heartwarming, but the context and meaning behind them is. Jamie fell for Aurelia, who cleaned his lake house in France, and the feelings are clearly mutual. He returned to his home in England and went to a family gathering. He barely crossed the threshold into the house, before realizing he had somewhere else to be: with Aurelia.

Prior to this moment, Jamie had been reserved in his actions towards Aurelia, but the image of a happy Christmas could only be fulfilled with the presence of the woman he loved.

Daniel

Daniel grew increasingly worried for Sam as he retreated to his bedroom more frequently and became introverted. Eventually, Daniel convinced him to open up, proving to him that his happiness was of great importance to Daniel.

The pair had recently experienced a great loss together and were going through the grieving process. With that in mind, Daniel was still able to focus his attention and love on his stepson. Whatever the problem, Daniel was ready to tackle it with Sam.

Karen

Emma Thompson’s portrayal of Karen is iconic. The first scene that springs to mind when her name is mentioned in relation to the film, is when she realized her despicable husband, Harry, one of the worst characters in Love Actually, had been cheating on her.

The devoted mother pulled herself together and continued to show her support for her two children at their nativity play. In the backstage rush, Karen ran into her brother, and without missing a beat, she threw her arms around him. The delight in seeing him was apparent and she was noticeably relieved to feel the stability and comfort that he represents.
