Lupin left a lot of unanswered questions after part 1. The Netflix series debuted in early January and quickly rose in popularity, surpassing Bridgerton, The Queen’s Gambit, and Money Heist in projected viewership numbers. The series, which follows the thief and master of disguise Assane Diop (Omar Sy) as he works to clear his father’s name and exact revenge on the man who framed him, is fraught with mystery, adventure, and great drama.

The last we saw of Assane, he was taking his family to Le Havre, France in celebration of the gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, Assane’s inspiration and the subject of Maurice Leblanc’s novels. With a cliffhanger ending, Lupin part 1 left a lot of storylines unresolved, including that of Assane finally being discovered by the officer Youssef Guedira (Soufiane Guerrab).

There was a lot of buildup leading up to the intense cliffhanger and there are quite a few questions that part 2 should most definitely answer. Here are four unanswered questions after Lupin part 1.

Will Youssef Arrest Assane?

Lupin Unanswered Questions After Part 1

Youssef was the only cop who was convinced that Assane was drawing inspiration from Maurice Leblanc’s books about Arsène Lupin, the gentleman thief. And so, for most of Lupin part 1, Youssef pored over all of the evidence that would link Assane’s heists to that of Leblanc’s fictitious stories. No one believed him, of course, but that didn’t stop Youssef from carrying on with the search. When he finally had a lock on what Assane looked like and his name, Youssef was finally able to confront him at the very end of Lupin’s part 1.

The cliffhanger left the moment open to interpretation and it could go both ways. Youssef could theoretically arrest Assane or the master of deception could get away. At this rate, it’s doubtful that Youssef will actually go through with bringing him in because that would stall the series and Assane’s search for his son. It’s also unclear whether Youssef actually has the grounds to arrest Assane at all considering he took off to Le Havre to find him without permission. It’s possible that Assane will figure out a way to get away like he has so many other times before.

Will Assane And Claire Ever Get Back Together?

Lupin Unanswered Questions After Part 1

Assane and Claire’s relationship has been pretty tumultuous from the start. When Lupin first introduced them, they were already separated. While the series didn’t outright state what happened for them to leave each other, each episode hints that Assane’s thieving and the lifestyle it breeds got in the way of him and Claire having a stable relationship. Assane was often away and secretive regarding what he was up to. In the fifth episode, Claire reveals that she loves Assane, but wants to let him go and can’t.

Of course, a big part of the reason they stayed together is because of their son Raoul. In addition, they have been friends since high school and have a lot of history together. However, Claire is currently seeing someone else. She and Assane still very obviously care for each other, but one can imagine that their relationship is going to hit an even bigger speed bump when Claire finds out that Raoul was kidnapped because of Assane’s work. That may possibly drive an even bigger wedge between them in Lupin part 2 and it’s doubtful that they’ll be rekindling their romance anytime soon.

How Will Assane Get His Son Back?

Lupin Unanswered Questions After Part 1

The last fans saw of Assane’s son, Raoul, he was being kidnapped by Hubert Pellegrini’s henchman Leonard while at gunpoint and unceremoniously being shoved into a car. Meanwhile, Assane and Claire were left to look for Raoul, but he was already long gone by then. Lupin showcased how much Assane cared for his son and they were really starting to bond after he gifted Raoul with the Arsène Lupin books — a gift Assane’s father, Babakar, also passed down to him. It seems rather obvious that Leonard will take Raoul back to Pellegrini, which will then force Assane to follow him. How the gentleman thief will manage to find him is ultimately the question since Pellegrini has largely remained an hard-to-reach antagonist. If Assane gets too close, Pellegrini might be quick to call security and/or threaten the life of Raoul. It wouldn’t be surprising considering what the man is capable of.

Will Assane Actually Defeat Pellegrini?

It’s a sound question, especially considering how powerful a man the Pellegrini patriarch is. While Assane has managed to gain the upper hand on several occasions, Pellegrini remains out of reach for the most part. What’s more, Assane would have to obtain more concrete evidence to bring him down. So far, Pellegrini has thwarted Assane’s plans to release the video footage he’d obtained from journalist Fabienne Bériot (RIP) that would have proven Pellegrini’s involvement in the embassy’s explosion during the 1990s. Pellegrini is a very powerful man with a lot of influence and connections. Assane is clever, but he may be more desperate than ever to take Pellegrini down now that Raoul has been kidnapped. However, the gentleman thief may now have to bide his time to come up with a plan that would maintain Raoul’s safety and also indict Pellegrini at the same time.

Assane is a man of many talents, but he may have to go to Juliette, Pellegrini’s daughter, for help in order to get closer to the man he wants behind bars. That would be the next logical step considering that Fabienne died and can no longer be an ally. Lupin’s part 1 finale certainly set the stage for them to potentially work together, revealing that they had been a couple in the past. Therefore, Assane may have to lean into his personal connection with her to get back his son and defeat Pellegrini. Conversely, Pellegrini is so powerful that Assane may not be able to win this time around. He’s gotten away with a lot of things, but Assane did not foresee the kidnapping of his son and that may change his entire approach to confronting and taking down Pellegrini.
