Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran Mark Ruffalo seems excited to pass the torch — or, more accurately, the “banner” — to Tatiana Maslany in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk.

At the New York premiere of his new Netflix film The Adam Project, Ruffalo discussed what fans can expect from She-Hulk, including lengthy scenes shared by the characters of Bruce Banner/Professor Hulk (Ruffalo) and Jennifer “Jen” Walters/She-Hulk (Maslany). “Tatiana Maslany is frickin’ legendary as the She-Hulk,” he told Access. “I’m passing the banner onto her… There’s some really good, funny, cool, long, long scenes between Professor and her. We’ve never really seen the Hulk interact with people the way he does in that show. It’ll be really interesting.”

Ruffalo made his MCU debut as Bruce Banner/Hulk in 2012’s The Avengers, taking over for Edward Norton, who played the character in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Ruffalo subsequently reprised the role in Iron Man 3 (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Captain Marvel (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021).

Endgame debuted Professor Hulk, revealing that Bruce Banner figured out a way to take the Hulk’s monstrous form while still maintaining his own personality and intelligence. While a de-mutated Bruce later appeared in Shang-Chi, the Professor Hulk persona seems due for a comeback in Disney+’s She-Hulk.

She-Hulk stars the aforementioned Maslany as Jen Walters. In the Marvel comic books, Jen is a lawyer and Bruce’s cousin. After Jen is shot by a mobster, Bruce performs an emergency blood transfusion to save her. Due to being injected with her cousin’s gamma-irradiated blood, Jen herself gains the powers of the Hulk. As She-Hulk, Jen would later carve out her own identity as a wisecracking superhero capable of breaking the fourth wall.

Ruffalo’s comment about passing “the banner” to Maslany is interesting, as Marvel Studios’ Disney+ shows have thus far served as a platform for established MCU heroes to retire and let their successors take the reins moving forward. In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, for example, Sam Wilson/the Falcon (Anthony Mackie) becomes the new Captain America in Steve Rogers’ absence. Meanwhile, Hawkeye concludes with Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) seemingly passing the Hawkeye name to fellow archer Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld).

Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk is slated to premiere on Disney+ in 2022.
