Although the NFL’s Washington Redskins is changing its name, the team isn’t ready to announce the replacement just yet.

Apparently, the team’s chosen alternative “is tied up in a trademark fight,” tweeted Washington Post sportswriter Jake Russell. This comes on the heels of the team revealing it “will be retiring the Redskins name and logo” upon completion of a “thorough review.”

The team began its review July 3 following renewed pressure spurred by Black Lives Matter protests of the May 25 death of George Floyd at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers. Those protests sparked widespread criticism of racist imagery in the public sphere.

The day before the Redskins announced its review, FedEx — a major sponsor — released a statement calling for the team to change the name. FedEx was followed by other sponsors, including Pepsi, Bank of America and Nike. In fact, Target and Nike stopped selling Redskins merchandise altogether, and FedEx also told the team privately that it would cancel its naming rights deal with the Redskins’ stadium.

The team has not publicly said what replacement names are under consideration.
