Marvel Hints Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch Could Be Mutants In The MCU

Marvel has hinted Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch could be retconned as mutants in the MCU. When Wanda and Pietro Maximoff made their full MCU debuts in Avengers: Age of Ultron, they were initially described as “miracles.” They were the only two Hydra test subjects to survive exposure to the Mind Stone, and Maria Hill summed up their powers in a memorable conversation with Steve Rogers. “He’s got increased metabolism and improved thermal homeostasis. Her thing is neural electric interfacing, telekinesis, mental manipulation,” she explained. “He’s fast and she’s weird.”

It’s long been clear Marvel intend to retcon Scarlet Witch’s powers in some way. As far back as 2016, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told ComicBook her powers were far more than just telekinesis and telepathy; rather, he compared her to Doctor Strange, although he argued Scarlet Witch’s abilities are much more chaotic because of her lack of formal training. Two years later, the Marvel Studios Visual Dictionary seemed to hint Scarlet Witch could be retconned as a mutant. “Whether it altered her or merely unlocked something latent inside Wanda,” the Visual Dictionary noted, “the Infinity Stone on Loki’s scepter bestowed incredible powers of the mind.” In the comics, the word “latent” is typically used to describe a mutant with an inactive X-gene.

The latest clues are offered in Marvel’s recently-published The Wakanda Files, which are presented as Shuri’s notes on the world of the Avengers. Naturally, Shuri is absolutely fascinated by the Infinity Stones, and as such she’s collected several files pertaining to Scarlet Witch, including some sourced from Hydra. According to these records, Hydra didn’t just settle in Sokovia because they felt they could avoid the world’s attention there; they had also observed a number of genetic anomalies among Sokovians, which they believed would make them perfect test-subjects for the Mind Stone experiments. This certainly supports the theory Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver’s powers are actually genetic in nature, with the Mind Stone triggering something latent within them. In other words – they are indeed mutants.

Supporting this theory, The Wakanda Files makes it quite clear the twins’ powers are biological in nature. Although their abilities are very different, both apparently possess ionized nervous systems, with Quicksilver conducting an electrostatic current throughout his body; his super-speed is the result of expelling that energy. Scarlet Witch’s powers are even more intriguing, though:

“The Stone similarly transformed her nervous system, but it has ionized and charged it in ways that have given her an extraordinary ability. Neural-electric interfacing allows her to create bursts of extreme energy using only her mind and the tips of her fingers. The manipulation of this energy permits her short bursts of levitation, in addition to a staggering weapon that only requires her bare hands.

What is beguiling is how Wanda’s nervous system has also unlocked potential for telekinesis. These are not parlor tricks; she is not just bending spoons. She can manipulate minds and plant suggestive thoughts, even enhance preexisting paranoias. She can see into the mind of a human, find out what they fear and what will motivate them.”

The scientists conducting the assessment note they believe Scarlet Witch has only begun to tap into her true potential, and indeed the WandaVision trailer suggested that is indeed the case. It clearly showed Scarlet Witch manipulating reality on a fundamental level, creating a sort of “reality bubble” around the town of Westview. It seems Wanda’s “neural-electric interfacing” has expanded to allow her to tap into the raw forces of reality itself, in a similar fashion to Doctor Strange and the Masters of the Mystic Arts.

Of course, any retcon of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch as latent mutants has profound implications for the MCU. It means mutants have existed in the MCU all along, with the X-gene presumably lying dormant and only rarely activating. Just as in the case of the twins, all it would take is the right burst of cosmic energy to trigger those latent X-genes – and that could already have been provided, courtesy of the various snaps seen in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Scarlet Witch could be retconned as the first mutant in the MCU, with many more to follow.
