Marvel Proves Thor Made A Mistake Leaving Mjolnir With Captain America

Warning! Spoilers for Thor #17 by Marvel Comics below!

After trusting Captain America with his hammer Mjolnir, Thor just learned that his iconic weapon has been stolen. Previously, Thor’s connection to Mjolnir has been weakening, likely due to the hero becoming the King of Asgard, weakening his enchantment. In response to not being able to control his hammer like he once did, Thor decided to leave it with Captain America until he could figure out what was wrong with it. Unfortunately, it turns out that was a bad idea.

Thor’s hammer has been on the fritz, as the enchantment is supposed to be for a worthy warrior. With Thor becoming the King of Asgard, his hammer has gotten heavier and heavier while getting lighter for everyone else. Not only did Mjolnir attack Iron Man unprompted, but even his brother Loki was capable of temporarily lifting it – as was a random man in Oklahoma. To stop Mjolnir from attacking his teammates, Thor decided to leave it with Captain America until he could figure out what was truly wrong.

In Thor #17 by Donny Cates, Michele Bandini, Elisabetta D’Amico, and Matthew Wilson, the King of Asgard and a disgraced Odin meet with Frigga (now the God of the Hunt) and Angela, with his sister trying to fix a divided family. Angela describes Asgard as “on the brink” and says she has no interest in cleaning it up. After having a heart-to-heart with Frigga about his true parentage and talking about the dark visions he received about Thanos, Thor receives a call from the Avengers. Captain America tells him he doesn’t know how it happened, but someone stole Mjolnir.

The cliffhanger ending shows that it was a mistake to leave it with Captain America, especially with his hammer resisting his enchantment. That’s not to blame Captain America for it being stolen. Still, as Jane Foster previously put it, Thor made a questionable decision by leaving his hammer after being shown a future where Thanos is killing everyone with it. Now, Thor has no idea who stole it or where it went – but it wouldn’t be surprising if the Mad Titan were somehow involved.

Thor’s hammer going missing is the worst-case scenario for the hero. But, unlike in the MCU, where Captain America quickly returned Mjolnir back to its timeline, in this case, he trusted him to keep it safe when something was wrong with it. Instead, Thor set up Captain America to fail, as he had no way of knowing what would happen. Now, the King of Asgard will have to face the consequences of abandoning his hammer while praying that the dark visions involving Thanos don’t come true before his eyes. Thor #17 is in comic book stores now.
