Marvels Disney Shows Could Bring Back A Forgotten SHIELD Character

Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series, Hawkeye, can bring back Mockingbird (Adrianne Palicki), a forgotten hero from ABC’s Agents of SHIELD. Confirmed to release on Disney’s new streaming platform at some point in 2021, Hawkeye will be the first MCU project to give the leading role to Earth’s Mightiest Marksman, played by Jeremy Renner.

The Disney+ series will center on the adventures of not one, but two characters who carry the mantle of “Hawkeye” in the comic books. The two main characters are Clint Barton and Kate Bishop — the female version of Hawkeye and a founding member of the Young Avengers in Marvel Comics. Kate Bishop, who fans have been eager to see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time now, has yet to be cast. Concept art for the show has indicated that both heroes will wear their iconic purple colors. As for who and what and they’ll be going up against, this has yet to be revealed.

It’s possible that Hawkeye — as well as the other Disney+ shows — will feature guest appearances from previously established MCU characters. Just like the movies, the shows could include a few surprising cameos. In the case of Hawkeye, Marvel could make use of Mockingbird aka Bobbi Morse, who hasn’t been seen since Agents of SHIELD season 3. In the comics, Hawkeye and Mockingbird had a whirlwind romance that resulted in the two being married shortly after meeting for the first time. The marriage, which was plagued by constant disagreements between the two characters, ended in divorce in the 2000s.

Mockingbird joined Agents of SHIELD season 2 as a SHIELD agent who went undercover at HYDRA. Agents of SHIELD’s take on the character came complete with her batons from the comics and a comic-book-inspired costume. She left Agents of SHIELD in the midst of season 3, after a diplomatic incident forced both Bobbi and Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) to part ways with the team. Her exit occurred because at the time, the plan was for Bobbi and Hunter to lead their own show, Marvel’s Most Wanted, but it was ultimately not picked up by ABC. Hunter did end up returning to Agents of SHIELD briefly in season 5, but Mockingbird seems to have been forgotten by the MCU.

That can be remedied in Marvel’s Hawkeye show. The two have an important relationship in the comics, and Bobbi even mentioned him by name in Agents of SHIELD. She references “Barton” when bringing up one of his missions, so it does seem possible that the two knew each other — and may have even worked together — during their time at SHIELD. Since Palicki has expressed a willingness to play Mockingbird again, this connection could be explored in Hawkeye (even though their romance from the comics is likely to be avoided, since Hawkeye is married).

Hawkeye can include an appearance from Mockingbird by having Clint require a favor from an old friend of his from his SHIELD days. This would give Marvel a great opportunity to properly tie Agents of SHIELD to the MCU while simultaneously letting Hawkeye interact with a character associated with his comic book counterpart.
