Marvels Greatest Thief Is Collecting The Living Infinity Stones

Warning: contains spoilers for Black Cat #9.

Marvel Comics’ master thief Black Cat is gathering up heroes whose powers mimic those of the Infinity Stones in her ongoing series. Black Cat is written by Jed MacKay, with art by C.F. Villa, colors by Brian Reber, and letters by Ferran Delgado. In the new arc, titled Infinity Score, readers discover the consequences for the new bearers of the Infinity Stones (who have made the Infinity Stones even more dangerous).

The Infinity Score arc ties back into the larger Infinite Destinies event which finds the Infinity Stones in brand new hands. The stories of the Stone-Bearers coming into their new powers have been playing out across Marvel annuals spanning the larger comics universe. The new Stone-Bearers include Star, Prince of Power, Overtime, and Quantum. The Infinity Stones are no mere rocks – they border on sentient and seek out beings whose desires most align with the power they possess. However, getting one of these stones comes at a cost – much like the sacrifice on Vormir in the MCU – each of the new Stone-Bearers must pay a powerful price for their new powers.

In Black Cat #9, Felicia has just completed the heist of the century against none other than Nick Fury, escaping with a mysterious box that contains the “baby super-villain” Star (as Black Cat calls her). Black Cat greets the freshly awakened Stone-Bearer and explains that she has a special mission for her: to eradicate the cancer from Monica Rappaccini’s body. Rappaccini is a former scientist from A.I.M. Black Cat’s client – who she refuses to name, but is clearly Doctor Doom – wants to add her to his staff. After getting Star to agree, Black Cat is back to her thieving ways, this time going after the bearer of the Time Stone, Hector Bautista, who was discovered by Captain America in Captain America Annual #1.

Having the Infinity Stones become human is certainly a unique take on the concept. Seeing the consequences of the Bearers’ strong desires – and their immediate impact on the Marvel Universe – spread out across the annuals of various heroes is an inventive way to reignite interest in the Infinity Stones, which have been a crucial MacGuffin in Marvel’s comics for a very, very long time. The Stone-Bearers in the Marvel Universe will cause waves that may have far-reaching consequences.

But why is Black Cat chasing after the Stone-Bearers? She revealed to Star what purpose she served (make Rappaccini healthy so she can work for Doctor Doom) but has yet to reveal why she’s chasing after Hector Bautista, bearer of the Time Stone. The Infinity Stone heist will continue until Giant-Size Black Cat #1 comes out in November, where all her secrets will be revealed. Until then, there are plenty more books to come out between now and November – and much more chaos for the Stone-Bearers and Black Cat to cause.
