Throughout the main story of Mass Effect 2, Shepard will encounter new potential upgrades to weapons, armor, squadmates, and even the Normandy itself. The upgrade system in Mass Effect 2 is accessed via the Tech Lab on the Normandy. To unlock it, players will need to recruit Mordin Solus on Omega. The terminal in the Tech Lab allows Shepard to see all available upgrades and research them using rare minerals. Some upgrade schematics can be purchased from vendors at hubs like Omega, the Citadel, Tuchanka, and Illium, or found on missions. Others come from squadmates’ suggestions or as a result of making enough upgrades from the Weapons and Armor categories.
The Armor Upgrade section of the Mass Effect 2 upgrade interface includes options that increase damage protections and make the Unity ability more powerful and potent. There are also upgrades that improve squadmate biotic and tech abilities, making them stronger and more potent. With so many available options, it can be difficult to know what to prioritize, especially early in the game when they have fewer rare resources and credits to work with. Here are the best Armor Upgrades to research first in Mass Effect 2.
Best Armor Upgrades to Get Early in Mass Effect 2
The order in which Shepard unlocks Armor Upgrades in Mass Effect 2 tends to vary depending on what purchases they make and what order they complete squadmate recruitments and Loyalty missions. It is important to note that these upgrades are different from the various armor pieces Shepard can loot or purchase from vendors during the game. Those pieces and sets also have properties to increase health, damage protection, shields, or otherwise augment tech and biotic abilities, but they are separate from the Tech Lab upgrades.
From the start of the game, players should always prioritize upgrades to Damage Protection and Medi-Gel carrying capacity. These two upgrades help unlock the best and most powerful Armor Upgrades in the game. There are six possible Damage Protection upgrades and Medi-Gel Capacity upgrades to research. Once players find or purchase the upgrade, Damage Protection upgrades cost gradually increasing amounts of Palladium, and Medi-Gel Capacity upgrades cost Platinum to research.
After two to three Damage Protection and Medi-Gel Capacity upgrades, Shepard unlocks the next most important Armor Upgrades. These should be unlocked as quickly as possible for maximum benefit when using Unity:
- Trauma Module (Medical VI): Unity heals squad to full health; 15,000 Platinum
- Emergency Shielding (Shield Harmonics): Unity restores full shields to squadmates; 25,000 Platinum
- Hard Shields (Nanocrystal Shield): Reduces damage taken by Shepard’s shields by 20%; 25,000 Palladium
With these upgrades, Shepard can also eventually use Unity in Mass Effect 2 the same way they used First Aid in Mass Effect to quickly restore health for themselves and their squadmates in combat.
Next, Shepard can prioritize upgrading squad Biotic and Tech powers. The Biotic Amp and Omni-Tool upgrades are good for increasing the damage output of abilities. These work not only for Shepard, but also for the whole squad. These upgrades include:
- Tech Damage 1-6 (Multicore Amplifier): Increases tech power damage for the entire squad by 10% each upgrade; 500+ Element Zero
- Biotic Damage 1-6 (Hyper-Amp): Increases biotic power damage for the entire squad by 10% each upgrade; 500+ Element Zero
While not quite as high a priority, players can also eventually upgrade Omni-Tools and Biotic Amps to increase the duration of abilities and decrease cooldown times in Mass Effect 2. Additionally, they may want to invest in Redundant Field Generator when they have spare Palladium. While not the best Armor Upgrade, this upgrade has the chance to double Shepard’s shields any time an enemy breaks through one. Though it is difficult to predict when a new shield will regenerate, it can be good to have on hand in case. The lower-priority upgrades appear below:
- Tech Cooldowns (Hydra Module): Makes squad tech power cooldown 20% faster; 5,000 Element Zero
- Biotic Cooldown (Smart Amplifier): Makes squad biotic power cooldown 20% faster; 5,000 Element Zero
- Tech Duration (Custom Heuristics): Increases the duration of squad tech powers by 20%; 3,000 Element Zero
- Biotic Duration (Neural Mask): Increases the duration of squad biotic powers by 20%; 3,000 Element Zero
- Redundant Field Generator (Burst Regeneration): Shepard’s shields have a chance to fully restore instantly upon being depleted; 15,000 Palladium.
Players should ultimately make sure to prioritize and de-prioritize what works best for their unique playstyle, especially with this last group of Armor Upgrades.
