Mass Effect Guide Exploring Feros & Facing the Thorian

The first half of the original Mass Effect focused heavily on exposing Saren’s crimes to the Council. Once it became clear the Turian Spectre was up to something sinister, however, the council got on board and welcomed Commander Shepard as the first human Spectre. Their first assignment was to hunt down and capture Saren to bring him to justice.

Before leaving the Citadel, Captain Anderson and Ambassador Udina directed Shepard to Feros to find out why the Geth were attacking. Not only did Feros house the ExoGeni Corporation’s base of operations, there was a small colony called Zhu’s Hope that wouldn’t withstand the Geth for long. The fate of Feros was in Shepard’s hands, and as they unraveled the threads Saren left behind, the more obvious it became the former Spectre’s corruption went far deeper than anyone could have guessed.

Mission: Feros – Securing the Tower

Mass Effect Guide Exploring Feros & Facing the Thorian

After docking on Feros Shepard met David Al Talaqani, who directed them to Fai Dan at Zhu’s Hope. Here, the Geth make their first appearance, shooting David in the back and attacking Shepard and their squad. Fight through the Geth Troopers, and once they are taken care of, advance and head up the stairs.

This triggers a brief cutscene, exposing a Geth Hopper, which bounces into the tight corners above. Head up the stairs, keeping an eye out for the Hoppers and taking them out when they reveal themselves. Upon arriving at Zhu’s Hope, head through the encampment and toward the back, where you will meet with Fai Dan and Arcelia Silva. There is an opportunity during this conversation to earn +2 Paragon for choosing the, “I’m happy to help” option or +2 Renegade for telling him they didn’t fight through the Geth for them. During this conversation, the Geth attack again, and Arcelia tells Shepard to get to the tower.

Once the Geth have been dispatched, head up the stairs, taking out Hoppers along the way, until reaching the top of the tower. The panicked colonist there can’t be saved, but Shepard can wipe out the Geth that killed them. Head through the door and turn left to reach the tower. Battle Geth Troopers and recon drones, remaining in cover as a dropship flies over and unleashes more troops. Enemies may include Troopers, Rocket Troopers, Destroyers and a Juggernaut, depending on Shepard’s level. After all enemies are extinguished, another cutscene launches to show the dropship leaving. Grab the medical kit and upgrade, then head back down to talk with Fai Dan again.

There are various tasks that need to be done around Zhu’s Hope, but the priority for this mission is eliminating the Geth and finding out what they’re after. Up the stairs, a previously unavailable door to the elevator that leads to the skyway is lit. Pass the elevator and go down the stairs, encountering a few of the Hoppers and a colonist. Take out the Geth and continue descending until reaching the tunnels. Turn right and cross the bridge. Open the door on the other side of the bridge and take out the Geth snipers overhead. Advance into the tunnel and deactivate the Geth Assault Drone and Shock Trooper before heading up into the next area.

Here, three Krogan warriors await. Draw back to lure them into the corridor, then take them out. Grab the upgrade and the technician’s kit near the beacon, then destroy the beacon to complete the primary mission. Return to the activated elevator.

Mission: ExoGeni Headquarters

Take the elevator to the garage to access the skyway. Aid the colonists in the garage against the Geth attack, then get into the Mako and drive along the skyway. There are numerous barriers, Geth Troopers and Armatures along the way to the next station. Shoot through them, either stopping and getting out for battle, or using the Mako’s guns. Drive carefully, as falling off the skyway will kill everyone and relaunch at the last save point.

There are scientists holed up near ExoGeni Headquarters, and Shepard can stop the Mako when approaching their location to talk to the people inside about what’s going on. There are a couple of side-quests available for pickup here, including finding Juliana’s missing daughter, Lizbeth. Back in the Mako, travel onward, taking care of the Geth along the way. Upon arriving at the ExoGeni Headquarters garage, get out and fight off the Geth. Once cleared, go forward and look around the ruins. Approach the door and bypass to enter to find a malfunctioning object, an armature and a fusion containment cell. Drop into the opening leading into the cavern where someone is firing a weapon.

Speak with Juliana’s daughter, Lizbeth. She reveals that the Geth are searching for a creature called the Thorian. She will hand over her ID badge, and just as the conversation ends, 10 varren attack. After fighting them off, go into the facility. At the top of the stairs, a Krogan yells at the uncooperative VI. Take out the Krogan and speak to the AI, who believes Shepard is Lizbeth, which reveals that she knew more about what ExoGeni was up to than she let on. They set the Thorian loose and allowed it to take over the colonists so they could monitor and study the situation.

Battle through headquarters to escape and get back to Zhu’s Hope. In the first area, squadmates will notice the legs holding the dropship to the building. Across the catwalk, spy two Geth kneeling over a glowing orb. Take them out and inspect the orb, then grab the crate. Fight through the Krogan and grab the items in the room, then go back to the main area to access the next room.

Once all the Geth have been dispatched, access the Shuttle Bay door controls, which will only work when calibrated under 30 PSI. Each button is numbered, choosing either the 13, 11 and 7 combination or 17, 11 and 5 will close the door and carve off the claw to sever the dropship from the building. This initiates a cutscene where Joker announces that the colonists in Zhu’s Hope have gone crazy.

Go back up and exit the area where the barrier once blocked entry. Lizbeth joins the crew in the Mako, but stops Shepard when hearing her mother over the comm. Hopping out, she rushes down to join them. The ExoGeni representative is very aggressive during the conversation about the Thorian; dealing with him can evoke Renegade points if aggressive or Paragon if Shepard can convince him the colonists are worth saving. The scientists give Shepard a modified nerve gas for use with grenades to subdue the crazy colonists and avoid killing them. Head back to the Skyway and power through the Geth to reach the main garage.

Mission: The Thorian

After arriving at the garage, equip the Anti-Thorian gas to knock out the colonists and head down to Zhu’s Hope. There is a crate with more grenades just inside the door if Shepard runs low while knocking out the crazed colonists to keep them alive. Keeping them alive gives more Paragon points, while shooting them all nets maximum Renegade points. Once all colonists have been knocked out or killed, access the crane controls to open an entryway into the Thorian’s lair. Fai Dan comes out at this point, fighting with himself and the Thorian’s control over him. After he shoots himself, descend into the lair.

After examining the Thorian, an Asari clone emerges to speak, detailing why Saren had come. The Thorian has no interest in talking after that, and battle ensues. Take out the clone and zero in on the Thorian Neural Node, then fire at it with the shotgun. There are six of these in total, one located on each level of the lair. While battling through Thorian creepers on every level, the Asari clone respawns after each neural node is destroyed, producing a total of seven clones that need to be taken out.

Destroying the last node kills the Thorian and releases the Asari, Shiala. Speak with her to learn more about Saren’s plans to obtain the cipher from the Thorian and allow her to transfer the cipher over to Shepard. Determine whether to allow Shiala to live or not, then return to the surface and head back to the Normandy. Once you’ve returned to the ship, if Liara is in the group, she will offer to join minds with Shepard again to help understand the visions from the beacon. Afterwards, dismiss everyone and update the Council to complete the mission.
