His two solo movies, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home are well-loved for their youthful feel and lighthearted comedy, but fans do have some unusual opinions about this snazzy iteration of Spider-Man.
The transition from Sony to MCU created issues with character licensing, and predictably there has been an influx of comparison between Holland’s superhero, and all the other versions before and after him. Despite the success of these Spider-Man movies at the worldwide box office, there were some unsatisfied fans.
7 Peter Didn’t Need An Avenger Mentor
A lot of Spider-Man’s origin story changed when he was welcomed into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Redditors like Fun_Size21 felt that Tony Stark’s ‘guidance’ was very overbearing and took the movie away from Spidey himself. They said “I am not a fan of how the MCU has used the other Avengers to mentor Peter… Seems like the MCU makes Spider-Man incapable of carrying his own movie when he is more than capable without some run-in with an Avenger.”
Not many fans would agree with this opinion as a lot of people thought it was quite refreshing to see Peter Parker engaging with other Avengers instead of being secluded to his own corner of the world. He handled almost everything himself with a bit of help from Tony, and the MCU inclusion opened up countless avenues for Spider-Man.
6 Holland’s Spider-Man Fails Too Much
Netizens don’t all unanimously love Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, because they believe that he is quite confused and useless in his solo movies, and messes up way too much for a viewer to think of him as a superhero. His personality is making mistakes and failing, and Reddit user Stopthelemurs says “Seeing him as a new, inexperienced hero has been done to death in movies, I want experienced Spider-Man.”
Some fans may argue against this, stating this opinion may be valid if it depicted an older Peter Parker. However, Holland’s version is in high school and learning, which would make him inexperienced and prone to mistakes by default. The point was to show his growth.
5 Tony Stark Taking Over Uncle Ben’s Role Was A Disaster
The absence of Uncle Ben is felt keenly by fans of the superhero, and they think that the least MCU could have done is show a flashback to Ben saying the popular “With great responsibility” line, or have Peter mention his name. Reddit user Randomnighmare says “That is the one character, out of two Spider-Man characters, that has to be either mentioned and/or seen in any Spider-Man adaptation. Having Robert Downey Jr’s, Tony playing the role of Uncle Ben was a disaster because Tony isn’t Uncle Ben.”
However, some fans may disagree with this by arguing that Tony fulfilled the fatherly role Uncle Ben did. While Uncle Ben helps Peter realize the responsibility that comes with his powers, Tony helped Peter realize the responsibility that comes with being an Avenger. It was imperative for a young boy like Peter to have a fatherly figure to look up to, and it only adds up that a superhero looks up to another superhero to keep him on the right path.
4 The Constant Humor Should Stop
Marvel movies are known for their tongue and cheek jokes and comic relief in the middle of stressful situations, and Spider-Man also had its share of wisecracks. Redditors like Dmapguy didn’t love it as much as others, and pointed out “Marvel Studios needs to cut back on the constant humor.”
In the Spider-Man context, the humor that cuts through the tension is completely justified, as that was who Peter Parker was, as a character. MCU’s Spider-Man joked and quipped his way through most situations, often borrowing from high school comedies, and the inclusion of the hilarity is sticking to canonical material, which is always a good thing.
3 Ned Is Annoying
Peter’s sweet best friend was hated by some Redditors, who felt that he “wasn’t funny,” almost gave away Spider-Man’s identity, and was incompetent in the battles with the superhero. They also argued that his character is only design for “comic relief.”
However, some fans may argue that the criticism is a little unfair as Ned was just a high school kid, who was excited about being best friends with Spider-Man. To expect him to be suave would be unrealistic, and if he could fight battles with the bad guys, then he would have been Spider-Man, not Peter.
2 Michelle Can’t Replace Mary Jane
Zendaya’s role in the movie was received warmly, mainly because she’s Zendaya, but parts of the audience felt like her MJ was a bad stand-in for the original, who couldn’t be replaced in the Spider-Man lore. According to Fun_Size21, “I love Zendaya, however was I the only one disappointed to find out she isn’t Mary Jane, but a knockoff due to Sony not allowing the MCU to use the character?”
Even if Marvel Studios couldn’t legally use Mary Jane’s character name, that didn’t mean that the new MJ couldn’t have her traits. Comic book characters very often get adapted and altered to keep things fresh – just like Sam Raimi borrowed Gwen Stacy’s signature green jacket and gave it to Kirsten Dunst’s MJ and borrowed elements of “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” to suit his narrative.
1 Homecoming Is Mediocre
2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming was a huge hit, approved by fans and casual watchers alike, but unpopular opinion has it that the movie was not that great and left much to be desired. As Reddit user beneaththewreckage argues that it had a “Lack of personal consequence for Peter as it focused primarily on his role as Spider-Man and building its place in the MCU. Interesting characters like Flash and MJ are sidelined and made caricatures to be played off for comedy.”
Given that this was the first in-depth look at Holland’s Peter, it’s not surprising that Homecoming was spent building up his place in the MCU. He was still a kid trying to work out the complexity of his powers and the responsibility that came with them, which is why the movie primarily focused on that before exploring the other characters in-depth.
