MCU Theory Doctor Strange 2 & WandaVisions Real Villain (Not Mephisto)

Many are theorizing based off a few hints that Mephisto is the villain of WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but it could be that the real subject of these teases is being overlooked. It may be that Chthon, a character with deep ties to Scarlet Witch, is the secret antagonist of both MCU projects.

In WandaVision, it seems that Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) herself is the problem, as she’s the one who constructed the fake world of Westview with her reality-warping abilities. Plus, she’s been accused of directly controlling the town’s residents and forcing them to bend to her will. However, it hasn’t been confirmed that Wanda is the only person responsible. A twist in an upcoming episode could reveal that another character is somehow pulling the strings. Whoever this person is could be connected to the plot of Doctor Strange 2, a movie that will continue Scarlet Witch’s MCU story.

Since it’s been said that WandaVision will somehow lead directly into Doctor Strange 2, it would make sense for the show’s main villain to also be the primary threat that she and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange will face off against. A commonly-held opinion is that Mephisto will soon stand revealed as their true foe, but it may not be him at all. Here’s why the villain in question may instead be Chthon, who he is to Scarlet Witch in the comic books, and what he would mean for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Why Mephisto Is Thought To Be WandaVision’s Villain

In Marvel Comics, Mephisto is a powerful demon who resides in Hell and makes deals with notable heroes and villains for his own gain. He’s the character who turned Johnny Blaze into Ghost Rider, plus he was deeply involved in the story that saw Scarlet Witch magically create two children. Given his background and certain teases the MCU has dropped, there is a case to be made that Mephisto could be at the center of Westview’s troubles. First of all, the painting of a devil – who looks remarkably like Mephisto – was spotted in the trailer for Disney+’s Loki show. Then there was Agnes’ comment to Wanda in WandaVision episode 2. In a response to Dottie’s “the devil is in the details” line, Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) responded, “that’s not the only place he is”. It wasn’t clear what she meant, but there was an implication, that this reference might have some hidden meaning. All things considered, it does seem plausible that the MCU’s Mephisto is about to emerge.

Why Chthon Could Be WandaVision’s Real Villain

It should be noted that though Mephisto would make sense, he’s not the only Marvel Comics villain who fits with what the MCU seems to be hinting at. There’s also Chthon, an incredibly powerful, demonic entity. Thousands of years ago, a spell cast by sorcerers imprisoned him within a place called Mount Wundagore. Since then, Chthon has put in motion several schemes to secure his release, using characters like Morgan le Fay, Modred the Mystic, and Scarlet Witch as his pawns. One of the tools characters have used when trying to bring him back was Chthon’s ancient spellbook, the Darkhold (which was actually employed in Agents of SHIELD).

When Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were born on the peak of Mount Wundagore, Chthon secretly imbued her with some of his power, thus forming a connection that went unknown to her for some time. It was revealed in the pages of The Avengers in the 1970s that it was Chthon who was really responsible for most of her mutant abilities. As for why Chthon did this to her, his intention was to make her a vessel for him to exploit in the future. Once she grew up and became an Avenger, Chthon used Modred the Mystic to bring Wanda to him so that he could possess her body. Chthon knew he couldn’t step foot out of his magical prison, but he could still accomplish his evil goals by controlling Scarlet Witch, who he saw as a weapon of his own creation.

Due to his demonic nature, he could easily be the character in Loki’s devil painting as well as the villain Agnes could have been teasing in WandaVision. Furthermore, the Chthon connection would help Marvel explain how and why it’s retconning Scarlet Witch’s powers. Revisiting her backstory and revealing that Scarlet Witch was born on Mount Wundagore could fit nicely into their plans too, especially if they have any intention of making Magneto her real father.

What Chthon Could Mean For Doctor Strange 2

Chthon being WandaVision’s true antagonist could have major ramifications for Doctor Strange 2. If it turns out that he gave Scarlet Witch her powers, he could end up using her or possessing her at the end of the series. It may be that his plan from the beginning was to break her emotionally, and then assume control of when she’s at her weakest. If that were to happen, Doctor Strange may have to defeat Chthon in his next movie. Alternatively, Scarlet Witch could be saved from Chthon’s influence by the end of WandaVision. A combination of SWORD, Vision (Paul Bettany), Agnes (who may actually be Agatha Harkness in disguise) and maybe even Quicksilver (Evan Peters) could help Wanda fight him off. After finding out what’s really going on, Scarlet Witch can unite with Doctor Strange to beat him for good in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

In the comic books, Chthon was portrayed as one of the most powerful beings in existence. That has a lot to do with why most of the stories centered around him didn’t really have him appearing in the flesh. He was more of an unseen, mysterious entity who had to rely on other means to terrorize the Marvel Universe. The idea behind this was that Chthon was such a tremendous threat that if he were ever to be let loose from his prison, it could be the end of everything. It was for this reason that Chthon’s full power was rarely unleashed in the comics.

With that mind, an MCU adaption of Chthon in Doctor Strange 2 could turn out to be the worst thing that’s ever happened to the heroes. With his vast amount of dark magical power, there’s no telling what level of chaos and destruction he could cause not only on Earth, but in the multiverse as a whole. If the events of WandaVision allow him to get free, Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch will need all the help they can get to imprison him once again.
