Metroid Dread only launched on October 8th, yet it has already had the strongest launch out of any game in the series so far. The latest entry in the Metroid series has received glowing reviews for once again delivering everything that the 2D Metroid games are known for and then some.

Metroid Dread has received more marketing than any other Metroid game in the months leading up to its release. Multiple trailers were released for the game even outside of Nintendo Directs, and Metroid Dread would even be featured on advertisements in Tokyo train stations. It’s believed that the way Metroid Dread was pushed by Nintendo was what allowed it to succeed this much so far in sales.

A listing from Gamesindustry.biz shows the sales from the week of October 9th in detail. Metroid Dread is listed as the third highest-selling game for that week, and while the exact numbers still aren’t known, Gamesindustry.biz states that it is the fastest-selling Metroid game to date, eclipsing Metroid Prime on the GameCube. Metroid Prime still has the crown for the fastest-selling Metroid title by boxed titles, but Metroid Dread still remains the highest-grossing Metroid title at launch when considering the currently unknown exact digital sales.

These sales figures aren’t entirely surprising when considering the amount of pre-orders Metroid Dread received on sites like Amazon and Gamestop. Following the moment Metroid Dread was announced during Nintendo’s E3 2021 presentation, pre-order sales were significantly higher than any other Metroid game up to that point. This could be due to a variety of reasons, from the way Metroid Dread was presented at E3 to the gaming climate being different today than how it was back during the GameCube days when games that sold poorly later went on to become cult classics many years later.

But whatever the reason, the stars aligned for Metroid Dread to be succeeding the way it is now. This is the first time since Metroid Prime that the series has reached a wide audience, possibly even the first time in the series history. Metroid Dread being emulated by fans is also luckily not having a diminishing impact on the overall sales. This is the type of boost Metroid has needed for many years, and the success of Metroid Dread brings hope that the upcoming Metroid Prime 4 will have similar sales figures once it gets a full unveiling sometime in the future.
