MHAs All For One Is Just As Twisted As Star Wars Palpatine

The abysmal ways in which Star Wars’ Emperor Palpatine mistreats his apprentice Darth Vader have made their twisted dynamic a major subject of debate among fans in a similar way to how My Hero Academia’s All For One mishandles his own successor, Tomura Shigaraki.

In Star Wars, the most famous of Palpatine’s transgressions against Darth Vader transpires during The Return of the Jedi when the emperor’s apprentice battles against his son Luke Skywalker aboard the second Death Star. The purpose of Luke’s ordeal is to turn him to the dark side, and defeating Luke would undoubtedly help crush the nascent Jedi’s spirit and willpower. But when Luke overcomes his father in a fit of rage, Palpatine encourages the boy to finish him off so he could take his father’s place as Palpatine’s servant.

In the comics, Vader endures even more manipulation at the hands of his master when Palpatine believes Vader lost his way after his little vendetta against those who hid Luke from him. To get his apprentice back on track, Palpatine ensures that Vader experiences fear, anger and hatred by thrusting him into a situation, where survival is unlikely, even for Vader. If Vader dies in the pursuit thereof, so be it. But if he survives, he could become even stronger than before.

In My Hero Academia, it was originally believed that the series’ main antagonist, All For One, was grooming Tomura Shigaraki to be his successor. But his true aspirations later become known when he takes over Shigaraki’s body upon his successor’s awakening. Of course, All For One rationalizes his questionable motives by noting that, by taking complete control, Shigaraki can now rest and truly obtain his true power, as the heroes had rudely interrupted his transformation. But when Shigaraki expresses his displeasure at his current predicament in chapter 297, explaining it was not his intent to just be All For One’s pawn, All For One says that Shigaraki is only alive because of him and that he’s more than just a pawn. He is the king. But in this case, All For one is clearly building off of Shigaraki’s earlier chess metaphor and not referring to an actual king. So while Shigaraki is an important piece, he is still a piece that All For One will control.

It is therefore understood that All For One has been grooming Shigaraki into the perfect vessel that will allow him to obtain the coveted One For All Quirk. Even though All For One is incredibly powerful on his own, it is likely that he realized that the only way to succeed in acquiring One For All was to undergo human experimentation, but rather than fall under the knife on the operating table, he chose Shigaraki instead, a boy who already possesses the highly destructive Decay Quirk. So, in essence, All For One is now experiencing all of the benefits that come from a body that has undergone experimentation without actually having to experiment on himself.

While both antagonists possess different goals, Star Wars’ Palpatine and My Hero Academia’s All For One adopt ethically questionable strategies to achieve what they seek by manipulating and exploiting the trust of their successors. Palpatine resorts to torture to ensure his apprentice remains powerful and even betrayal when more capable candidates make themselves known. Meanwhile, All For One never truly wanted a successor and just created the fake persona of the master so that he could use his subordinate as a stepping stone to further his own aspirations.
