Moon Knight Directors Pitch To Marvel Was 200 Pages Long

Moon Knight director Mohamed Diab secured the gig following a 200-page pitch to Marvel. With Marvel Studios continuing to roll out in-demand content, some of the biggest names in Hollywood are clamoring to be a part of the process. Moon Knight is one of several key titles Marvel Studios is producing over the next year, and it will be released as a miniseries on Disney+.

Following the successes of other Marvel Studios shows, such as Loki and WandaVision, Disney’s 6-episode miniseries of Moon Knight is scheduled for release in 2022. Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Ex Machina star Oscar Isaac will play the lead role of Marc Spector/Moon Knight, while May Calamawy and Hollywood heavyweight Ethan Hawke have been cast in roles that are still undisclosed. The series, created by Umbrella Academy developer Jeremy Slater, will see Egyptian Diab serve as executive producer, as well as directing four of the six episodes of the upcoming show.

In an interview with THR, Diab reveals he secured the gig following a 200-page pitch he and wife, Sarah Goher, drafted and presented to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. The pitch was enough to impress Feige, and Diab was brought on-board as principal director. Diab spoke of his first brush with Hollywood, not to mention his English-language debut, saying:

“Honestly, it was a great pitch. The moment we finished I told Sarah that if we didn’t get this job, something was wrong. It’s been such a great experience – I’m learning a lot… I can’t compare Marvel to anything else, but it’s a great machine. Those guys are geniuses.”

After making a name for himself in his home country with directorial debut Cairo 678 and controversial drama Clash, which was selected by Cannes, Diab and his wife moved to the United States. Setting up in Michigan where they had family, the couple wrote and optioned a couple of projects, but the pandemic caused a halt to all productions. Then out of the blue, Marvel approached him to pitch for Moon Knight, and he and Sarah crafted the 200-page pitch to seize the opportunity of a lifetime. Marvel Studios hiring Diab for Moon Knight may seem like an unusual choice, but the company has a good track record of hiring the right creative talent, and Diab could be just the addition they’re looking for.

Moon Knight is one of the lesser-known Marvel stories, but this suggests it will give the show an opportunity to explore important themes and to be experimental. Filming is currently taking place in Budapest, and will finish in Atlanta. The exact plot remains unclear, but Hawke has spoken about his excitement at being involved, and his respect for co-star Isaac. While we know the role Hawke will play will be a villain, it remains unclear exactly which villain. But the fact he has likened his character to cult leader David Koresh suggests he could well be playing The Sun King, one of the principal antagonists of Moon Knight.
