Warning! Spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #80 by Marvel Comics

The Beyond Corporation is working hard to ensure no other hero named Spider-Man will use the trademarked name as long as they own it, with Miles Morales being their first big target. In Amazing Spider-Man #80, readers learn more about Beyond’s attempts to ensure their corporate-backed Spider-Man is the only web-slinger using the moniker, as they’ve created a special department to enforce the acquired trademark.

In the current Amazing Spider-Man ongoing series, Ben Reilly has become the main Spider-Man for the time being as Peter Parker recovers from devastating injuries. However, Reilly isn’t operating independently, as he’s financially back by the Beyond Corporation, who have thrown millions of dollars into the new Spidey, making the hero more corporate than ever before. Beyond’s provided new tech and numerous monetary advantages to Reilly, with the new Spider-Man is basically controlled by the organization – as every move he makes is tracked and accounted for. But, as Reilly tries his hand at being the main Spider-Man, the Beyond Corporation is ensuring no one else can use the name.

In Amazing Spider-Man #80 by Cody Ziglar, Michael Dowling, Jesus Aburtov, Erick Arciniega, and VC’s Joe Caramagna, the Beyond Corporation struggle to track down Spider-Man after he’s drugged by Kraven the Hunter. After the hero is recovered (with some battle wounds), Beyond’s leader Maxine Danger informs Reilly’s handler that the project can be rebooted if need be. After the phone call, Danger is shown meeting with another department of the Beyond Corporation, as she’s briefed by her legal team about enforcing the Spider-Man trademark. She’s told that the “Brooklyn Spider-Man” aka Miles Morales, will be “taken care of” after being served a cease and desist order.

In the most recent issue of his ongoing series, Miles Morales was served the cease and desist order, as he was straight-up told he was violating their trademark by using the ‘Spider-Man’ moniker. The Beyond Corporation has been ruthless in enforcing the trademark they acquired from Doc Ock when he was Superior Spider-Man, as Reilly previously informed Peter that he had no choice but to let him be Spider-Man as well.

If Miles Morales doesn’t oblige to the Beyond Corporations legal matters, how will the organization enforce their trademark? Previews for Amazing Spider-Man #81 reveal they’ll send Ben Reilly after Miles Morales. But, how far will they go in stopping him? Are they going to use force or will they launch a precedent-setting legal battle against Spider-Man? Readers can learn more as Amazing Spider-Man #80 is in comic book stores now.
