Shazam Director Reveals His Other Favorite Comic Book Movie

Shazam! director David F. Sandberg reveals his favorite comic book movie other than his DC Extended Universe hit is David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence. Sandberg first rose to stardom with his work in the horror genre, crafting a number of praised shorts before making his feature-length debut with the adaptation of his Lights Out short. After delivering another horror hit with Annabelle: Creation, the filmmaker would venture to the world of blockbuster filmmaking with 2019’s Shazam!, which saw rave reviews from critics and audiences and was a modest box office success.

A History of Violence was loosely based on John Wagner and Vince Locke’s graphic novel of the same name in which a small-town diner owner has his seemingly idyllic life upended when he is put in the spotlight after confronting two robbers in self-defense, leading to secrets regarding his past coming to light. The cast for the film was led by Viggo Mortensen alongside Maria Bello, William Hurt, Ed Harris, Ashton Holmes, Peter MacNeill and Stephen McHattie. The film hit theaters in 2005 to rave reviews and a modest box office success and apparently has garnered one notable fan.

Sandberg recently hosted an impromptu Q&A with fans via his Instagram stories, sharing teases from Shazam! Fury of the Gods as well as answering miscellaneous questions. One such query regarded what his favorite comic book movie is outside of his DCEU hit, to which he revealed to be A History of Violence. Check out the response below:

A History of Violence has an interesting history in Hollywood, with many having praised it at the time for its thoughtful script and performances, namely William Hurt who scored an Oscar nod for his work. The film is also reportedly the last major Hollywood film to hit shelves on VHS and selling for hundreds of dollars for its rarity in the years since. While some audiences may forget its history as a DC graphic novel, it has nonetheless enjoyed a following in the years since, with Mortensen consistently citing it as one of his best films and Sandberg now also revealing it as his favorite comic book film aside from his own.

Though Shazam! may not be an R-rated pulpy noir thriller like A History of Violence, Sandberg brought a similar character-first approach to its storytelling that resonated well with critics and audiences, establishing it as the second-best reviewed DCEU film behind Wonder Woman. Sandberg and his cast have certainly teased a larger scale for the superhero sequel, but with original screenwriter Henry Gayden back in the writer’s chair alongside Sandberg as director, the film certainly seems poised to recapture the same success of its predecessor. Only time will tell when Shazam! Fury of the Gods hits theaters on June 2, 2023.
