Our Biggest Unanswered Questions After Jumanji The Next Level

Jumanji: The Next Level, the latest installment in the Jumanji franchise, raised some important questions about the Jumanji universe that were left unanswered by the time the credits rolled. Based on the film Jumanji (1995), Jumanji: The Next Level is a modern retelling about a group of kids who get trapped inside of a life-threatening video game and need to play their way out to return to the real world.

Jumanji: The Next Level picks up three years after the events of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, following Spencer (Alex Wolff), Martha (Morgan Turner), Bethany (Madison Iseman), and “Fridge” (Ser’Darius Blain) as they embark on their own separate paths post high school. From college to volunteering, everyone appears to have moved on since their experiences inside the world of Jumanji except for Spencer, whose college life lacks the purpose and adventure he once found embodying the avatar Dr. “Smolder” Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson). Wishing to regain that confidence, Spencer reenters the Jumanji video game and is followed shortly after by his friends, his grandfather Eddie (Danny DeVito), and Eddie’s estranged friend Milo (Danny Glover), both of whom enter the game accidentally.

As they search for Spencer, the cast of video game characters, who are once more portrayed by Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Kevin Hart, are tasked with a new mission and a new level to defeat before they loose all three of their lives. While Jumanji: The Next Level may feature some of the same components that made Welcome to the Jungle so enjoyable, the film goes beyond its predecessor by exploring new concepts that pose some questions about the way the Jumanji universe operates.

Who is the person playing the avatar Jurgen the Brutal?

Our Biggest Unanswered Questions After Jumanji The Next Level

As the cast of characters play their way through the new level of Jumanji, they are also tasked with defeating a new villain, Jurgen the Brutal, a warlord who is also responsible for the deaths of Dr. Bravestone’s parents. In a post on Instagram, Dwayne Johnson shared a picture of himself and co-star Rory McCann, the Game of Thrones actor who portrayed Jurgen the Brutal, along with the reveal of a surprising plot twist, that the villain was actually an avatar in the game. Not only does this reveal suggest that our journey with these characters is far from over, but it also indicates that someone from the real world is playing the part of the villain.

The next question that comes to mind is who is this mystery player controlling the actions of the antagonist? Is it someone we’ve met in past films? Or will it be someone completely new who’s been trapped in the game for years attracted to the power and authority that comes with playing an evil villain? Knowing this bit of information about Jurgen the Brutal, it also makes you rethink the events of Welcome to the Jungle. If Jurgen the Brutal was an avatar, then it’s also likely that Professor Van Pelt (Bobby Cannavale), the evil archeologist who stole the jewel Jaguar’s Eye, was also an avatar that was selected and played by someone in the real world. Is it possible that Van Pelt was being played by the same person controlling Jurgen? Has there been an ultimate showdown between our heroes and this unknown villain in the works since the reboot? Whoever the villain may be, this plot twist adds a new sense of agency to the actions of the villain avatar, meaning that while our heroes believed the villains in Jumanji were simply NPCs, the person playing the villain might have known they were facing other real-world players.

What will happen to Milo once the players leave the game?

Our Biggest Unanswered Questions After Jumanji The Next Level

After the events of Jumanji: The Next Level, viewers are left with some unanswered questions about the way time functions inside of the video game console. After disclosing that he is ill and doesn’t have much time left to live, Eddie’s former business partner and friend Milo, portrayed by actor Danny Glover, decides to live out the remainder of his life inside of the Jumanji video game as the Pegasus-inspired flying horse avatar, Cyclone. In what was meant to be a happy ending for Milo, as he flies off into the boundless skies of the Jumanji world, the audience is instead left wondering about the quality of life before him.

The way that time functions in the Jumanji universe has been briefly addressed in past films through Robin William’s character Alan Parrish in the original Jumanji (1995) and Colin Hanks’ character Alex Vreeke in the more recent rendition Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. While both characters ended up being trapped inside of the Jumanji game for a number of years, time functioned differently for the two of them. Alan, who was playing the board game version of Jumanji in 1995, was fully aware of the passage of time and even aged as he spent 26 years of his life stuck inside the board game. Alex, on the other hand, seemed surprised when the other characters told him that 21 years had passed and he himself had not physically aged since he spent that time personified as the avatar Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough (Nick Jonas). Despite their varied experiences, the two characters who actually lived inside of the Jumanji universe had one thing in common: they were both actively playing the game.

At the end of Jumanji: The Next Level, Jurgen the Brutal has been defeated, the Falcon’s Heart has been shown to the sun ending the drought, and the players have won the game. Now that all of the game’s objectives have been accomplished and the players are no longer actively playing, it begs the question what will happen to Milo once the other players leave the game. Will the game restart and Milo will set off on another mission solo? Or does the Jumanji universe, in a solipsistic fashion, shut down when there are no more players left to play? If Sony Pictures decides to move forward with another installment in the Jumanji franchise, hopefully Milo’s fate will be addressed in the following film.

How will the sequel to Jumanji: The Next Level connect to Jumanji (1995)?

Ever since we saw Alan Parrish’s hut in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, audiences have known that there is a link between the original Jumanji and the sequels. The idea that these films exist within the same universe was further confirmed at the end of Jumanji: The Next Level, when there was a surprise cameo made by an actress from the original movie, Bebe Neuwirth, who played Judy (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter’s (Bradley Pierce) aunt, Nora Shepherd.

Nora appears towards the end of Jumanji: The Next Level as the owner of Nora’s, a restaurant that was formerly owned by Eddie and Milo. After the events of Jumanji, it appears that Nora is living out her dreams of running a bed and breakfast on a smaller scale by owning her own restaurant. Apart from being a treat for Jumanji fans as Neuwirth reprises her role almost 25 years later, the meaning behind Nora Shepherd’s appearance in Jumanji: The Next Level is unclear, as is her continued role in a possible sequel.

In the mid-credits scene of Jumanji: The Next Level, a horde of ostriches can be seen running wild outside of Nora’s restaurant, insinuating that the sequel may feature a return to the original formula of Jumanji, where the elements of the game invade the real world. Now that the dangers of Jumanji are transitioning from the video game console to reality, Nora’s experiences with it in the past might have come in handy if it weren’t for the fact that the timeline was reset at the end of the first film. Since Nora has no memory of the board game that brought destruction and chaos to their town, if she were to return in the sequel, she may solely act as a mediator to naturally introduce other characters from the original film, such as Sarah Whittle (Bonnie Hunt), who still remembers the experience despite the reset timeline.

With the addition of the open-ended mid-credits scene in The Next Level, it’s safe to assume that we can expect more from the world of Jumanji and its director Jake Kasdan. While there has been no official word from Sony Pictures about the continuation of the Jumanji franchise, the events of Jumanji: The Next Level seem to be leading up to a possible sequel where all of our questions will likely be answered.
