Modern Family 10 Things That Make No Sense About Luke

When it comes to TV shows not making sense, Modern Family has steadily been able to keep things pretty logical, and the writers are great at housekeeping. The characters remain firmly themselves, and the show has aged gracefully, but there are still some questionable details that slipped through the cracks.

Luke, played brilliantly by Nolan Gould, is one of the funniest characters on the show, but he’s also one of the most flawed characters too. His personality shifts all too often, and he’s clearly are character that the writers couldn’t entirely peg down, leading to some of the most nonsensical moments of the show.

10 Applying To College

It’s no secret that Luke isn’t the brightest of the Dunphy family, and he even arguably edges out Haley as the dumbest, so it doesn’t exactly make sense that Luke applies to not just decent colleges, but high-end ones such as NYU and ND.

Fans knew that he wouldn’t have a chance of getting a place at those schools, but Luke seemed to believe he could. Not only that, but Phil and Claire were strangely deluded by thinking he could get in too.

9 His Age

Throughout the whole series of Modern Family, Luke’s age skips around, especially in season one. When the show first started, Luke was 10 years old, which is clear when Claire mentions it in the episode “Coal Digger,” and, in theory, he should have turned 11 years old by the episode “Fizbo.”

However, three episodes later in “Not In My House,” it’s revealed that Luke is still 10 years old. This was a problem with the other child characters, too, as all of their ages continuously change.

8 The Omelette Dance

It’s unanimously agreed that the omelette dance is one of the worst jokes in the entire series. When Mitchell turns up at the Dunphy household on his birthday and the kids haven’t gotten him a git, Haley encourages Luke to perform the “omelette dance” in which Luke continuously sings, “It’s your birthday, I’m an omelette.”

This all occurs when Luke is much older than he was since the first season, and he’s supposed to be getting smarter, but even his 10-year-old self would have come up with something more creative.

7 Getting Accepted To College

As it already didn’t make one bit of sense that’s Luke was applying to colleges that he couldn’t possibly get in to given his idiocy and immaturity, to make things more unbelievable is that he actually did. Luke was granted entry into the University of Oregon, but it doesn’t make any sense, as, prior to that, Luke was being refused by community colleges. So, unless it was an administrative error, Luke’s acceptance was a massive oversight by the University of Oregon.

6 He Wasn’t At His Grandfather’s Memorial

In what is one of the saddest character deaths on the show, Phil’s father, Frank, played brilliantly by Fred Willard, dies of old age. It’s a hard scene to watch, especially now that Willard has passed away. But, given the character’s presence throughout the show and the chemistry he had with the children, it makes no sense that Luke didn’t attend the memorial, and there was no mention as to why he wasn’t there.

5 Mommy Issues

Luke has changed since season one in a lot of different ways, but one of the strangest character changes is his penchant for older women. In one of the later episodes, Luke brings home an older woman, and, though it might have been one of the best plot twists in the show, it came out of nowhere.

It wasn’t just a one-time thing, either; as he dates older women on several occasions, but it makes no sense as to why Luke would have mommy issues.

4 Being Gifted

Though Gould continuously breaks character, he is actually a genius, as he’s a member of Mensa and has an IQ of 150. The same can’t be said for the character he plays, as Luke could never focus and never showed any form of intelligence.

But, a whole episode is dedicated to Luke seeing a psychologist, who reveals to Phil and Claire that their son is a genius. Not only does that not make sense, but the writers seemed to forget about the episode, as every consecutive scene following the episode showed Luke acting more stupid.

3 His Jock Attitude

In Luke’s early years, though he wasn’t smart, he was still highly creative, interested in strange things, and always had an outside-the-box way of thinking. But, when he grew up and entered his mid-teens, he turned in to a jock with a bratty attitude and started having very little respect for Manny, whom he had been friends with all his life. It was almost out of the blue that his character completely changed.

2 Hatred For The Police

Despite his peaceable upbringing, Luke doesn’t particularly care for the police all that much. Even from a young age, he has been criticising them. One of the biggest telltale signs of Luke’s criticism was when he said, “order a pizza and call the cops. We’ll see who gets here first.”

Though it’s hilarious, as the subject matter contrasts with Luke’s young age, as he was 11 when he said it, there is no reason for Luke to have such strong opinions on the police at that young of an age.

1 His App

One of the ways Luke changed for the better was that he finally started to focus on school… well, kind of. With being a millennial and trying to get rich quick, Luke’s focus swiftly moved to creating a phone app. Luke creating an app actually makes sense, as it uses his creativity that he had since he was a child, and he spent his whole life developing gadgets with Phil. But, creating an app requires some serious expertise with technology—something the character never really had—and, on top of that, the arc is never even resolved.
