Since its release in the early 1990s, the Mortal Kombat franchise has developed from a series of successful video games, to stunt shows, comics, books, animated movies, and live-action films. With a rotating roster of characters, each with their own powers and unique fighting style, fans all have their own preferred fighter.
While there have been many different versions of the characters, the new Mortal Kombat movie offers its own take on the combatants in a film filled with visually stunning fights and brutal fatalities. As the various warriors battle to the death, some clearly emerged as more powerful than others.
10 Goro
A member of the Shokan race, Goro is an enormous four-armed half-dragon that was sent to kill Cole Young. Physically imposing and aggressive, Goro uses his extra arms to throw devastating combinations of punches. Goro was on the verge of defeating Cole Young and would have killed him if Cole Young had not discovered his arcana, his inner strength, during the battle.
With a size advantage and extra limbs that have to be accounted for, Goro is a skilled warrior with brute strength, but his bulkiness makes him susceptible to quicker opponents and his lack of ranged attacks limits his fighting ability.
9 Jackson “Jax” Briggs
As a military man, Jax is disciplined, well trained, and highly skilled. Even before he receives his robotic arms, he is courageous enough to fight against Sub-Zero in order to save Cole Young. Once Jax loses his arms in his fight with Sub-Zero, he demonstrates his mental strength in relearning to use his cybernetic arms in combat.
Jax only becomes even more powerful when he is able to properly use his arms, channeling his training and experience into his enhanced physical form. Jax is physically and mentally strong, able to defeat lesser fighters, but was easily overpowered by Sub-Zero in his only real fight against a powerful opponent.
8 Kung Lao
From his introduction, Kung Lao is already in touch with his arcana and, as such, is powerful from the moment that he shows up in Mortal Kombat. He skillfully wields his metal hat as both a shield and as a lethal weapon.
In his battle with Nitara, he shows off his power and skill with his hat. Additionally, Kung Lao consistently demonstrates his leadership ability as he trains the other champions and helps them get in touch with their arcana. Kung Lao is strong enough to defeat Nitara but was quickly defeated by Shang Tsung.
7 Liu Kang
Liu Kang, Kung Lao’s cousin and friend, has already acquired his inner power by the time Cole, Sonya, and Kano encounter him. He informs the group, and the audience by extension, about the Mortal Kombat tournament and assists with their training.
Even though Liu Kang already gained the ability to shoot fireballs, his powers grow even more throughout the movie as he is motivated to avenge Kung Lao, culminating in a full display of his power in his fight against Kabal. He is already one of the most powerful characters in Mortal Kombat, and he only appears to be getting stronger.
6 Sonya Blade
Sonya Blade is one of the first characters to piece together what is going on in Mortal Kombat, using her military special forces training to take control of the situation and put together a plan. When her authority is questioned by Kano, she overpowers him and asserts her rightful position as the person in charge.
Despite being born without a mark, Sonya Blade proves that she deserves a spot in the tournament. Her power becomes even more clear once she gets in touch with her arcana. The movie never showcases her full abilities but she was powerful enough to defeat Kano even when he had abilities and she did not. The only time the film shows her using her powers results in her blasting a hole through Mileena.
5 Cole Young
At the beginning of the movie, Cole Young is a tough cage fighter that can more than take a punch. He is a simple, hard-working family man who is suddenly thrust into combat. His power is initially less developed than the other characters but slowly grows throughout the movie, reaching a turning point when he defends his family from Goro and unlocks his arcana in the process. From that moment on, he demonstrates growing physical power as well as leadership and toughness.
By the end of Mortal Kombat, Cole Young has clearly found himself and he appears to be set up to become even more powerful in the future, potentially becoming the next Scorpion. He is not as polished or experienced as some of the other fighters, but he has obvious untapped potential.
4 Sub-Zero
Tasked with killing all of Earthrealm’s heroes before the tournament to ensure Outworld’s victory, Sub-Zero is a brutal, merciless killer strong enough to take down even the most worthy opponent. More than just powerful, Sub-Zero is skilled and crafty, consistently finding creative ways to use his ice powers to his advantage.
Even before fully becoming Sub-Zero, his alter ego Bi-Han demonstrated immense fighting ability in the movie’s opening sequence. Sub-Zero has always been a fan favorite and he does not disappoint in Mortal Kombat, clearly ranking among the most powerful characters in the movie. The other characters know better than to take him on alone, as Sub-Zero easily dispenses of most of the other combatants. While he is ultimately overmatched against a fully powered Scorpion, Sub-Zero is the best fighter for the majority of the film.
3 Scorpion
In his original Hanzon Hasashi form, he proves himself to be a superbly talented warrior, using only a farming tool to slaughter multiple attackers in defense of his family. However, after fully taking the form of Scorpion, he becomes a supernaturally powerful fighter capable of defeating nearly anyone one on one.
Fueled by revenge but disciplined enough to control his rage, Scorpion wields the flames of the Netherrealm effectively. Fans have always loved Scorpion and will surely be pleased with the power he displays in Mortal Kombat. Even Sub-Zero cannot defeat Scorpion in his final form, proving that he is the strongest fighter.
2 Shang Tsung
Shang Tsung has long served as one of the franchise’s main villains. In Mortal Kombat he is depicted as the ruler of Outworld and commander of its forces. He is desperate to kill Earth’s champions before the Mortal Kombat tournament can begin to ensure Outworld’s victory.
There is a reason that Kabal, Goro, and even Sub-Zero obey Shang Tsung as he possesses power on a level beyond all the other fighters. His fight with Kung Lao alone demonstrates both his total darkness and great power. For the most part, Shang Tsung avoids fighting and allows his underlings to do his bidding, but in the moment that he does engage the enemy, he is able to suck the soul out of Kung Lao.
1 Lord Raiden
As the thunder god and protector of Earthrealm, Raiden demonstrates an incredible amount of power. It is mentioned in the movie that he is unlike the other gods because he actually cares enough to oppose Shang Tsung. When Shang Tsung arrives at Raiden’s temple to kill the Earthrealm champions and ensure a victory for Outworld, Raiden is powerful enough to fend him off and protect Earth’s champions. He also has the ability to transport the champions of both realms anywhere he wants.
While Raiden mostly functions as a mentor figure to Earth’s champions and is unable to participate in the fights, it is clear that he is the most powerful character in Mortal Kombat.
