There are a ton of easter eggs and secrets in Mortal Kombat (2021) for fans of the long-running fighting game franchise. Many of these secrets reference iconic lines from the main games while others hint towards characters who didn’t quite make the film’s final cut. The most fascinating secrets in the film, however, are the ones that reference Mortal Kombat’s absolutely massive amount of lore.

The Mortal Kombat timeline underwent a reboot in Mortal Kombat 9 that continued through the next two games in the series, with the events and characters of previous games either being reconfirmed through DLC or being quickly retconned to fit with the new timeline. Mortal Kombat (2021) has some pretty cleverly hidden nods towards some retconned events and characters from previous games, including a mural in Raiden’s temple that should be familiar to fans of 2006’s Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon served as a sort of finale for the pre-MK9 timeline, with plenty of iconic characters getting killed off during the game’s opening cinematic. The story of MK: Armageddon has probably one of the craziest story modes that the series has ever had, with players taking on the role of newcomer Taven. Taven’s Konquest Mode takes the form of a beat ’em up throughout the various realms, with Taven encountering and fighting many characters through the franchise’s history.

The mural in the new Mortal Kombat film references both the battle royal that Armageddon’s open cinematic depicts, as well as Taven. The painting seems to depict the guardians of the realm Edenia, Taven’s parents Argus and Delia, watching over the body of a man who has a striking resemblance to Taven. The painting in Raiden’s temple in Mortal Kombat (2021) also has silhouettes fighting in a large battle. Given that the painting has clear events from Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, it’s not too much of a stretch to assume that these silhouettes represent the massive brawl outside of Blaze’s temple that was shown in the game’s opening cutscene.

Taven and his brother, Daegon, are actually their father’s attempted solution to avoid the coming catastrophe. After Delia has a vision of the Armageddon, Argus is asked by the Elder Gods to build a pyramid as a way to safeguard against the apocalypse. He also decides to have his two sons encased inside monoliths, with a dragon watching over each of them, as another safeguard.

Armageddon would end up being an event where the sheer number of fighters spread across the realms would become too much for reality to handle, and thus the fighters would begin to become more chaotic and unstable. As seen in the game’s opening cutscene, this led to a massive battle that would prompt Argus’ safeguard to erupt from the sands and unleash Blaze, a creation of the Elder Gods intended to kill as many fighters as possible in an attempt to prevent Armageddon.

In the Konquest Mode, Blaze’s awakening causes Taven to also awake and begin his quest to prevent Armageddon. Players are tasked with traveling to many of the different realms and collect gifts that Argus and Delia left for Taven and Daegon. However, Daegon awoke much earlier than Taven and tries to kill his brother at multiple points in the story. The story ends with Daegon killed by Taven, only for Blaze to appear and state that the two brothers have strayed from what was meant to happen. Blaze and Taven fight, which leads to Taven killing the fire-being and proceeding on his plan to stop the end of the world. His plans fail, and he instead chooses to become the protector of Edenia and delay Armageddon for as long as it takes to find a solution. Though Taven has not canonically been seen since, he was featured in some Mortal Kombat X endings, hinting that the Armageddon event may still be looming, even in this new timeline.
