Mortal Kombats SubZero Is Actually Two Different Characters

Sub-Zero is a name that’s been shared by two different characters in the Mortal Kombat franchise. Mortal Kombat is a fighting game that arrived in 1992 that proved shocking and exhilarating in equal measure. It became a smash thanks to its addictive gameplay and roster of great characters, but parents and politicians protested against its gory violence and finishing moves. Regardless of the controversies, it spawned a major franchise that is still running to this day, with the most recent entry Mortal Kombat 11 arriving in 2019.

Mortal Kombat was also one of the first video games to receive a movie adaptation too, with the 1995 film still considered one of the better game to screen translations. It was a solid success but the would-be movie franchise stumbled with sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation in 1997, which tried to cram too many characters and fight sequences into the story while suffering from a bad script and miscast actors. Faring much better was 2020 animated adventure Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, which received good reviews for its great action and surprisingly solid script.

Mortal Kombat has an endless amount of fan-favorite characters, from Sonya Blade to Goro. Sub-Zero ranks very high on that list too, with the character being a warrior capable of shooting ice at other players. Alongside Scorpion, he’s one of the franchise’s most popular fighters, but the moniker has actually been donned by two different characters; Cryomancers Bi-Han and his younger brother Kuai Liang.

In the very first Mortal Kombat Bi-Han is a warrior from the Lin Kuei clan who takes part in the titular ceremony and is later killed by rival Scorpion. Seeking revenge on Scorpion, Kuai Liang took up the mantle of Sub-Zero for Mortal Kombat II and has been the de-facto version for pretty much every entry since, outside of entries like Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. That’s not to say Bi-Han let death get in the way of being a recurring player either, as he was later resurrected as wraith Noob Saibot by sorcerer Quan Chi.

While Noob Saibot is a villain in the Mortal Kombat series, Kuai Liang’s Sub-Zero is commonly depicted as a heroic character. Sub-Zero being a name taken up by two different characters will be old news to fans of the franchise, but more casual players or newcomers may not have realized this. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation also made this clear, with the original Sub-Zero being killed in the first movie and his brother making a cameo as the new incarnation for the sequel.
