My Hero Academia 10 Things About Gran Torino That Make No Sense

My Hero Academia is one of the most popular anime of the past decade. The series takes place in a world in which the overwhelming majority of the population are born with powers (known as Quirks), which eventually leads to a society that becomes divided between superheroes and supervillains.

The series focuses on Izuku Midoriya (Deku) who, despite being born Quirkless, is gifted the power of the Number One Hero and Symbol of Peace, All Might. While Deku initially struggles to use this power, he eventually comes to control it with the help of characters such as Gran Torino, a retired pro hero and teacher. While a decent amount is known of Gran Torino, aka Sorahiko Torino, there are some unanswered questions about his past and character.

10 His Height

One of the first things that strike the viewer when first seeing Gran Torino is the character’s height. Despite being a very skilled and powerful hero with a fearsome reputation, Gran Torino is a very short man standing at 4” 2.

While this isn’t necessarily strange on its own, what is odd is that Gran Torino wasn’t always this short. Flashbacks showed that Gran Torino was once a tall and muscular individual, so what happened? While some people do ‘shrink’ in old age, it isn’t this dramatic.

9 The Cane

Aside from his height and costume, one of the most striking features of Gran Torino’s character design is his cane. This highlights his age, showing that he ought to be viewed as an elderly and fragile character.

However, this isn’t the case. Gran Torino is still capable of zipping around at high speeds. This begs the question, why does he carry the cane?

8 How Did He Teach All Might & Izuku?

Gran Torino’s most prominent inclusion in the series has been to teach Izuku, with the former pro hero helping to show Izuku how to control the One for All power. All Might recommended Gran Torino as a mentor to Deku because the pro hero was also taught how to control his power by Sorahiko.

What is strange about this, though, is that Gran Torino never possessed the power of One for All. So this begs the question, why is he so effective at teaching the holder of One for All?

7 Why Did He Mess With Izuku?

Gran Torino’s design was heavily influenced by Yoda in the original Star Wars trilogy, with the creator of the series Horikoshi saying that Gran Torino gives off a ‘Dogobah’ kind of feeling in the narrative.

Much like Yoda, Gran Torino pretends to be a ditsy, slightly senile old man to trick Izuku Midoriya. However, it appears as though the only reason Gran Torino does this is to reference Yoda as there is no real narrative reason as to why he’d do this.

6 His Name

Gran Torino’s hero name seems like it is a reference to the Clint Eastwood movie of the same name. The movie itself follows the relationship that develops between a bitter Korean War veteran and a Hmong American man.

While this is an interesting reference, it doesn’t really make sense in terms of an in-universe narrative. For instance, while the name Gran Torino works well for an elderly hero, it doesn’t quite make sense for when Gran Torino was a young hero.

5 The Costume

Gran Torino has one of the most memorable costumes in the series. The costume itself appears to have been inspired by the design of Mega Man, with the gauntlets of both characters, in particular, appearing to be similar.

While the costume is good, it doesn’t exactly fit with his Quirk. Other characters have costumes that mirror their Quirk, such as Bakugo, so it’s strange that Gran Torino’s outfit doesn’t highlight his speed.

4 Why Did He Retire?

Gran Torino is a former pro hero and teacher at UA who retired several years before Deku would even attend the school. While he initially presents himself as fragile, Gran Torino shows that he is anything but.

Gran Torino not only shows that he is still a skilled teacher but also that he can still fight, with the character defeating a Nomu with little help. This begs the question of why Gran Torino retired at all, as it’s clear that he still enjoys teaching and is more than capable of helping fight crime.

3 His Lung Capacity

Gran Torino has one of the most memorable Quirks in the series. The character possesses the ability to shoot air from his feet to propel himself around at great speeds.

That being said, the air in Gran Torino’s feet comes from the air that he breaths in. This begs the question, what is Gran Torino’s lung capacity? He can bounce around a room very quickly and this would clearly require huge inward breaths to function.

2 His Strength

Despite being a small, elderly character, Gran Torino has shown himself to be a very strong individual. In the past, Torino was able to punch All Might so hard that the Symbol of Peace vomited. Recently, Gran Torino was able to defeat a Nomu almost single-handedly and carry All Might.

These feats of strength are incredible, particularly considering Gran Torino’s age. However, this begs the question of where this strength comes from as it clearly doesn’t come from his Quirk.

1 His Durability

Gran Torino’s main threat is his speed, with the retired pro hero capable of zipping around at great speeds to evade and attack enemies. However, he has also shown himself capable of great feats of strength and durability.

This durability is particularly strange considering Gran Torino’s age. For instance, Gran Torino is capable of taking a direct punch from All Might and remaining conscious.
