Naruto 8 Harsh Realities Of Joining The Anbu Black Ops

To become a member of the Anbu Black Ops within the Naruto universe is no easy feat. They’re powerful and capable shinobi hand-picked by the village Kage, and it’s fair to assume that this is a highly respected position that’s incredibly difficult to reach. After all, for most Hidden Leaf shinobi, there’s no greater honor than getting to serve their Hokage. Being personally recognized by their village leader for their talent and skill should only be a good thing.

In actuality, the Anbu — with its meaning literally translating to “Dark Side” — is an incredibly dark organization that holds more than a few harsh realities for anyone who’s scouted to join. Very few shinobi actually have the compatible personality to be able to handle the work and lifestyle that comes with being a Black Ops member without it deeply affecting them.

8 They’re At The Mercy Of Their Kage’s Whims

Naruto 8 Harsh Realities Of Joining The Anbu Black Ops

Members of the Anbu Black Ops are exclusively dispatched for missions by their village leader. While there isn’t much of a problem with this on its own since the Kage is the ninja who ultimately sends most if not all shinobi out on missions, Anbu members are a bit different.

The nature of the work that the Anbu Black Ops complete is much darker and life-threatening than typical shinobi missions. It doesn’t matter whether a member agrees with the values their Kage holds, as they’re forced to go along with whatever their village leader has planned regardless.

7 They’re Scouted When They’re Young, Ruining Any Chance At A Normal Childhood

Members of the Anbu Black Ops are scouted for later recruitment at an incredibly young age. For many members, this means being denied the chance at a normal childhood — or at least, as normal as a shinobi can have.

Characters like Sakura and Naruto are still shown to have time to make mistakes and indulge in personal relationships despite devoting themselves wholeheartedly to training. In stark contrast to this, by the age of thirteen — as young as eleven, in the case of someone like Itachi — they’re scouted to become Anbu members, ruining any chance for any childhood fun.

6 They Can Get Lost In The Facade Of Masks And Code Names

Due to the nature of their work, it’s imperative that Anbu members wear masks and use code names. This is done in order to conceal their true identities, which helps keep themselves, those close to them, and their villages safer as a result.

However, for some, this can be an incredibly harsh reality. Characters such as Yamato, who don’t have any memory of who they are prior to becoming an Anbu member, can feel as if the code names they use and the masks they put on are all that they are.

5 The Nature Of Black Ops Work Can Cause Members To Become Emotionally Cold

Anbu members are selected to go on missions that are much more dangerous and secretive than most. These can include — but aren’t limited to — assassinations, high-risk infiltrations, and interrogating enemy shinobi.

The nature of Anbu work can easily cause even those who are deemed to have “suitable personalities” to become cold and emotionally stunted. This is best seen with Kakashi and is a big reason why those close to him push him to leave the Anbu and become a team-leading jonin instead.

4 They’re Expected To Destroy Themselves If They’re Too Badly Injured On A Mission

The missions that Anbu members are sent on are highly sensitive and require a great deal of secrecy. Many members also possess unique, one-of-a-kind talents that aid in their work but would be disastrous if they fell into enemy hands.

Because of this, Anbu members are expected to destroy themselves if they become too injured during a mission. A regular shinobi might be able to cling to life until support or a rescue team can arrive, but members of the Anbu Black Ops don’t have this luxury.

3 They Aren’t Allowed To Share The Hardships Of Being An Anbu Member With Anyone

Naruto 8 Harsh Realities Of Joining The Anbu Black Ops

Expectedly, due to the nature of the work that Anbu members do and how secretive the entire organization is, they’re forced to keep to themselves. Members of the Anbu Black Ops aren’t able to share their involvement or the nature of their work with anyone else, aside from those who work alongside them.

However, given how emotionally cold Anbu members become because of their work, this isn’t exactly a shining pillar of support. Most regular citizens of Konoha have no idea who is and isn’t a member of the Anbu Black Ops, and members are unable to seek support from those close to them.

2 Root Members Have A Seal On Their Tongue That Literally Prevents Them From Talking About Their Work

Some members of Anbu are instead chosen to become part of Root rather than the Black Ops division. Root is led exclusively by Danzo Shimura, and members are specifically trained to discard any and all emotions and follow his orders without question.

This is true even when doing so may come at an overall detriment to the village. They’re completely unable to talk about the nature of their work with anyone, either. Unlike the Black Ops division, where it’s simply a strictly enforced rule, Root members have a seal placed on their tongues that prevents them from mentioning anything about their work.

1 They Essentially Become Obsolete After The Fourth Shinobi World War

At the start of the Naruto series, it feels as if the Anbu are vital to ensure the continued operation of Konoha, despite all the disadvantages of being a member. They take out, interrogate and trail incredibly dangerous targets, and take care of dirty work that could cause mass chaos if left unchecked.

However, after the Fourth Shinobi World War, there isn’t nearly as much of a need for the Anbu, as the villages are ushered into a time of stable peace. This leads to the Anbu losing much of its funding, with that money going to other facets of the Hidden Leaf that are proving to help improve people’s lives, such as Sakura’s Children’s Mental Health Clinic.
