Army of Thieves is a prequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead starring the kooky safecracker Ludwig Dieter (aka Sebastian) played by Matthias Schweighöfer, who also directed the new film. The fun action flick is comprised of a talented cast, including Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Guz Khan, and Stuart Martin. Army of Thieves premieres on Netflix on October 29.

Screen Rant spoke to Emmanuel and Fee about expanding Zack Snyder’s world and exploring their characters’ backstories.

ScreenRant: Can you talk to me and describe the chemistry between Sebastian and Gwendoline in the film?

Nathalie Emmanuel: These guys, when they first meet, she is mildly irritated by him. She’s like, “Okay, I need you, but you are also a lot. And I don’t really know what to do with this?” And so it’s quite funny that it was the initial meeting and she knows what she has to do and what she has to say to get him on board. She’s also just like, “Oh God, here we go. What have I got myself into?”

Then over the course of the movie, these guys challenge each other in the most unexpected ways; she’s suddenly challenged by him. He’s this surprise energy in her life that makes her question everything. And for him, he starts to see himself differently because of Gwendoline. They change each other. Then they develop this little romance, which is really lovely and kind of heartfelt and wholesome, which is really nice.

Ruby, you play Korina, she’s a master hacker and a true ride or die. Can you talk to me a little bit about your character and her relationship with Gwendoline?

Ruby O. Fee: I think Korina is like a big sister to the team. She has to take care of everyone. She wants to save everyone when they’re on the run. I think Korina and Gwendoline are like those tough power girls that stick together and if they say something, they mean it and they’ll do it no matter what. That was great to have, have someone and especially Nathalie on my side, which was amazing to play with her.

Army of the Dead was a zombie movie, but this is really a genre-bending prequel. Can you guys talk about working with Matthias as a director and collaborator? What did his directing style bring to Army of Thieves?

Nathalie Emmanuel: Because he’s an actor, he just very much understands what it takes, what we are doing, and then what our experience is like on set. I think that he as a person, is just such a playful person, he’s so fun and open and generous with his energy. I think he really gave us a lot of freedom to play and have fun.

As a director, I say this in literally every interview because of the fact that he led and directed a movie at the same time. I can barely walk and talk at the same time. I’m just like, “This is so incredible.” His background as an actor and I know that he has experience of directing and directing himself, but this was such a huge thing and he just absolutely knocked it out of the park.

I don’t want to give any spoilers away, but if your characters make it out of Army of Thieves alive, how would they fare in the zombie apocalypse in the Army of the Dead?

Ruby O. Fee: I think Korina would be good at hacking all the cameras in the city and trying to find out where, and which way is safe and some secret underground communication type or something like that. I think that would be her skill.

Nathalie Emmanuel: I mean, first of all, she’s already got a pretty sick crew around her. If Korina and Gwendoline were like, “Okay, now we’re in Nevada. How do we deal with this?” I think they’d be quite a good team, but obviously, Gwendoline has a physical element. She can fight, she can handle guns. She’s quick, and light on her feet and agile and stuff, but she can think quickly at the moment.

I think those skills are good for her, but she’s also good. She would be good if she was there on her own at finding, she would be able to go, “Okay, I need this, this, this, and this. And I need people to do these things.” And she would be good at finding who she needs to survive that scenario.
