Nathan Fillion Says His Slither Character Would Survive The Suicide Squad

Nathan Fillion reveals his belief that his Slither protagonist, Police Chief Bill Pardy, would be able to survive the events of The Suicide Squad. Released in 2006, the horror comedy hailed from writer/director James Gunn and centered on a small town in South Carolina that comes under siege from a malevolent extraterrestrial slug parasite, with Pardy and a variety of townspeople fighting to put an end to the alien invasion. The film would mark the first of multiple collaborations between Gunn and Fillion as the actor would go on to make supporting appearances in 2010’s Super and both Guardians of the Galaxy films.

The duo’s latest collaboration comes in The Suicide Squad, in which Fillion stars as Cory Pitzner, aka T.D.K. or The Detachable Kid, a metahuman with the ability to detach his limbs and use them as weapons. The film marks both Fillion and Gunn’s debut in the DC Extended Universe after the latter was briefly fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and hired by Warner Bros. for the follow-up before Marvel swiftly rehired him. Fillion is one of a number of new characters being introduced to the franchise in The Suicide Squad alongside Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, John Cena’s Peacemaker, Sylvester Stallone’s King Shark, Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher 2 and David Dastmalchian’s Polka-Dot Man, amongst others.

In time for the release of The Suicide Squad, Fillion reflected on his past working with Gunn with CinemaBlend, building his own Task Force X with his characters from the filmmaker’s prior films. When asked who he thought would survive Gunn’s DCEU film, the actor quickly responded with Slither hero Bill Pardy. See what Fillion had to say below:

“He’s ill-prepared, but he’ll do what needs to be done. He’s pragmatic. He’s a very practical man. I think he might get out of there.”

Since their first outing together, Fillion and Gunn have found unique and frequently hilarious characters for the star to tackle and while T.D.K. may be the most ridiculous thus far, there’s no denying the joy Pardy brought to viewers in Slither. Though bombing theatrical at the time of release, the film was hailed by critics and audiences for its B-movie sensibilities and Fillion’s protagonist was certainly one of the highlights. Pardy may have been a general everyman, but with Fillion’s charm and Gunn’s writing, his survival certainly became easier to root for.

Even with his pragmatic nature, though, Pardy’s survival in Slither may not translate just as well to The Suicide Squad. As Gunn has frequently teased, he was given carte blanche to kill whoever he wanted in the latter film and if trailers are a good indicator, it seems unlikely Fillion’s T.D.K. will survive the events of the DCEU adventure. Audiences no longer have to wait to find out as The Suicide Squad is now showing in theaters and arrives on HBO Max later today.
