Neil Patrick Harris Reacts To Key Similarity Between HIMYM & His New Movie

Neil Patrick Harris has discovered a connection between his new movie 8-BIT Christmas and How I Met Your Mother. Harris played whisky-swilling lothario and breakout character Barney Stinson for all 208 episodes of the show’s run. The series told the story of starry-eyed romantic Ted Mosby as he searched for his future wife in New York City. As a framing device, in 2030, Mosby recounts the story to his children and the events that finally led him to meet and marry their mother.

The series achieved global acclaim and popularity and catapulted Harris, who was previously known mainly as the child star of Doogie Howser, M.D., to further stardom. His new film, 8-Bit Christmas, tells the story of a ten-year-old in the 1980’s determined to buy the latest video game console on Christmas. Harris plays an adult version of the film’s younger main character, speaking to his daughter in the present and telling her a Christmas story from his childhood.

In an interview with Cinema Blend, the similarity between the framing devices used in 8-Bit Christmas and How I Met Your Mother is pointed out to Harris. The actor doesn’t appear to have made the connection, but once it’s noted, he agrees.

“That’s so funny! I didn’t even think about that. That’s so funny. I sort of took it much more in a Christmas Story narrator mode, but yeah, you’re totally right, with voiceover adult talking to kids about story from the past.”

The movie is scheduled for a November 24 release on streaming platform HBO Max and stars Winslow Fegley, June Diane Raphael, and Steve Zahn. Harris’s comparisons to A Christmas Story are plain to see, with the 1983 Christmas comedy classic undoubtedly a big influence on screenwriter Kevin Jakubowski. 8-Bit Christmas will be Harris’s fourth festive movie, after the television films The Christmas Wish (1998) and The Christmas Blessing (2005), as well as his appearance in 2011’s A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas.

With streaming platforms taking a more prominent role in the world of film and TV production and the wealth of festive movies available, there is certainly a good chance Harris will want to explore more Christmas movies in the future. Depending on how 8-Bit Christmas performs, Harris could return for a sequel, giving HBO Max a holiday franchise. For now, How I Met Your Mother fans can enjoy Harris’s performance in the Christmas movie, along with the structural similarities the film provides.
