µBrowser is an app that enables a full web browser experience on Apple Watch. Several watchOS revisions ago, Apple enabled a hidden web browser for the wearable. However, it was only accessible when a user receives a URL in the Messages app, and in a few other specific places throughout the OS. The hidden browser is limited in other ways as well, as Apple prevents users from being able to manipulate or change the URL.
While many probably won’t mind the lack of a web browser on their wrist, it’s still nice to have the option. For the most part, Apple’s implementation is fine as the Apple Watch is supposed to be a glanceable device, not something that should be used for long periods of time. In reality that’s probably why the Apple Watch doesn’t have a full version of the Safari app that users can access from the home screen.
For those that do want a full web-browsing experience, µBrowser might be the answer. µBrowser is a $0.99 app available from the App Store that tries to emulate a full browsing experience on the wrist. According to 9to5Mac, it allows users to enter web addresses or search the web, although users will need to open the companion app on an iPhone to add a bookmark. 9to5Mac does also note a few issues with the app, including sites with custom fonts loading standard fonts. In some cases, images might also not load, and there’s currently no option to go back or forth within the app. For reference, µBrowser requires an iPhone running iOS 15 or later, and an Apple Watch running watchOS 8 or later.
Browsing On Your Wrist
Overall, µBrowser seems like the perfect app for those who want a full web-browsing experience on the wrist. While it may prove especially beneficial to those using a cellular Apple Watch, it still works over Bluetooth when in range of a connected iPhone. No matter what, the app is far more functional than what Apple offers with its smartwatch.
Considering the Apple Watch Series 7 comes with built-in native support for a QWERTY keyboard, it is likely to be of even more benefit to wearers of the company’s latest wearable. For example, Series 7 owners will be able to directly type in the URL or search query instead of having to scribble or dictate the same information, as is the case for owners of older Apple Watch models.
