Samsung Releases Android 12 For Galaxy S21 Lineup Sorta

Samsung has released Android 12 for its lineup of Galaxy S21 devices, but with a twist. Google introduced the first developer builds of Android 12 in early 2021, following it up with beta versions throughout the summer. Several manufacturers have since released Android 12 betas for their devices, including Samsung, Asus, and OnePlus. The full Android 12 experience officially landed last month with the launch of Google’s Pixel 6 lineup.

Samsung has a long history of putting its own spin on Android, and that has been no different with its Galaxy S21 lineup. The devices arrived in January of this year running One UI 3.1, a build of Android 11 that features multiple Samsung customizations. There are many differences between One UI and stock Android, including a unique lock screen, larger app icons with more rounded corners, as well as Samsung’s own suite of apps. Because of these additions, Samsung typically takes some time to roll out updates after a new Android release.

Samsung has announced it’s rolling out the official build of One UI 4.0 for the Galaxy 21, S21+, and S21 Ultra smartphones starting today. One UI 4.0 has been available as a public beta since September, but this update promises to be more stable than previous versions. While there are still plenty of Samsung adjustments, One UI 4.0 has adopted Android 12’s Material You concept which uses a device’s wallpaper to influence the colorway of the operating system. One UI also promises deeper customizations for widgets, additional keyboard stickers, privacy improvements, and more.

Update Scheduled For Even More Samsung Smartphones

Samsung says it also has plans to roll out One UI 4.0 to several other devices including the older Galaxy S20 series, select Galaxy Note smartphones and its Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip lineups. The company also says it will launch One UI 4.0 for certain Galaxy Tab tablets. Samsung has not provided specifics on when non-Galaxy S21 products will receive the update, adding a caveat that software availability might vary by region.

Alongside the full launch of One UI 4.0, Samsung says it’s also introducing updated software for Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Watch Active 2, and Galaxy Watch 3. Starting today, owners will have access to new watch faces and improved health features. The new tools come in the wake of the merger between Samsung’s Tizen and Google’s Wear OS, the results of which debuted with the Galaxy Watch 4. While the older devices are still running Tizen, this newest update should make them feel a little more tied to the broader Samsung One UI ecosystem.
