NOS4A2 The Wraith’s Supernatural Powers Explained

In Jami O’Brien’s supernatural television series NOS4A2, the 1938 Rolls Royce Wraith has powers beyond the realm of imagination. In fact, its supernatural abilities are so extensive and intricate that they often dominate an episode’s entire narrative. The vehicle is driven by the strong creative Charlie Manx (Zachary Quinto), and is the only means of transportation to the inscape known as “Christmasland”. The Wraith’s abilities are not limited to solely transport Manx from the realm of the living to the world of thought, it can also transform people into blood-thirsty creatures with no means of escape.

Throughout the entirety of the series, the fact that the Wraith traps children and transforms them into vampiric creatures has been integral to the entire storyline. As Charlie Manx is the main villain in NOS4A2, his knife and inscape are just as villainous. Despite the initial belief that consuming the souls of children keeps him alive, as the series progresses, it is revealed that it’s the car that does. In season 1, episode 10, “Gunbarrel”, Craig (Dalton Harrod) attempts to escape the Wraith by jumping from the backseat to the front of the car. There are no visible barriers that could stop him, but when Craig tries, he is transported back to where he was.

The Wraith has three primary supernatural powers that make it an extraordinarily complex knife. It can turn children into vampires, keep Charlie Manx alive, and has wormhole-like capabilities.

The Wraith’s Powers & Abilities Explained

According to Charlie Manx’s backstory in season 2, episode 2, “Good Father,” he purchased the Wraith while he and his wife were living with less money than they were accustomed to. When he reveals the vehicle to Cassie, she decides to leave him and take their daughter Millicent with her. Charlie takes control of the situation by offering Cassie a ride to her sister’s house, where they will be staying. As they drive passed the turn for her sister’s house, Cassie begins to scream as Millicent’s teeth fall out to reveal fangs, and she kills her mother. This is the moment he creates Christmasland, and his first vampire with the help of the Wraith.

The way that it transforms children into vampires is by making them slowly forget their mother and/or father aided by Charlie’s manipulative words, which urge them to believe their parents mistreat them. As they lose any sense of who they were, the cold of the backseat freezes them, and forces the children to adapt to the shift in temperature. The final step in the process is replacing their human teeth with those of a vampire. When the Wraith takes the life of a child, Charlie Manx remains youthful and immortal. It is the only way to keep him alive, as “Gunbarrel” displayed when it caught fire and Manx nearly died. It can only do this because of the strong connection Manx shares with the vehicle, especially in the moment his daughter transformed into a vampire and his wife died.

The Wraith’s most complicated power is in its backseat, which also operates as a wormhole to keep people imprisoned. Just as Craig tried to get into the front seat from the back, many children have tried to escape utilizing the same method, to no avail. This power goes back to when Charlie drove his wife and daughter while creating Christmasland. He wanted to keep them trapped with him forever and, as a result, the Wraith created a means to ensure that no one leaves him ever again through the formation of the wormhole. With season 2 progressing and expanding on the Wraith’s powers, NOS4A2 will show an all new side to the relationship between Manx and his car.
