Nvidia Says GPU Shortage May Last Until 2022

Buying an Nvidia GPU has been virtually impossible for quite a few months now, and per new comments from Nvidia itself, the shortage may last well throughout 2021. While Nvidia’s honesty on the current situation is appreciated, it also doesn’t paint a very encouraging picture for people that have been trying to buy the company’s components.

Nvidia unveiled its GeForce RTX 30 Series in September 2020, and ever since the graphics cards went on sale, they’ve been seemingly nonexistent. The GPUs are almost always out of stock at official retailers, and when they do become available, they’re sold out in an instant. This has been a direct result of the global chip shortage that countless companies are facing, as consumers are demanding more tech gadgets than supply chains are able to produce.

At least in the case of Nvidia, it looks like lacking availability of its GPUs will continue for a while longer. During the company’s annual Investor Day, Nvidia’s executive vice president and chief financial officer — Colette Kress — said, “Overall demand remains very strong and continues to exceed supply while our channel inventories remain quite lean. We expect demand to continue to exceed supply for much of this year.” In other words, buying an Nvidia GPU will remain a challenge throughout 2021. Kress noted that Nvidia believes it’ll have “sufficient supply to support sequential growth beyond Q1,” but that’s for Q1 of 2022 — which is roughly a year out at this point.

Tips For People Trying To Buy An Nvidia GPU Right Now

For anyone that’s been trying to get their hands on an RTX 3070, 3080, 3090, or anything else, this isn’t exactly good news. Nvidia’s latest GPUs are among the best the company has ever released, and despite them already being impossible to buy for seven months, Nvidia is now saying that wait will continue even longer. While there’s no magical trick to beat the shortage and buy a GPU without any hassle, there are some tips to keep in mind that can make the process a bit easier.

For starters, there are plenty of websites that regularly track Nvidia GPU inventory across stores like Amazon, B&H, Best Buy, and more. Some of the most popular ones include NowInStock.net and ZooLert, not to mention Twitter accounts and Discord servers that strive to do the same thing. Similarly, some retailers have an option to sign up for inventory notifications so that customers are emailed as soon as more stock becomes available. Both methods require patience and fast reflexes if something does become available, but it’s better than trying to buy a GPU completely blind.

Outside of that, it’s really just a matter of being patient for supply and demand to level out. Nvidia wants the shortage to be over just as badly as shoppers do, because so long as it continues, that means fewer GPUs being sold to people that want them — and less money in Nvidia’s pockets. 2022 may be a way out, but at least there’s a distant light at the end of the tunnel.
