One Piece 10 Plot Twists That Everyone Saw Coming

One Piece has sustained its decades-spanning story by somehow managing to keep the surprises coming. Whether it’s with the slow reveal of what the One Piece actually is or sudden betrayals, the series has been great at keeping its fans on their toes.

However, while any anime can have its surprises and twists, they don’t all land with the same impact, with some of them even being seen from a nautical mile away. Given that One Piece has one of the most committed and speculative communities around, it shouldn’t be a surprise that they may have picked up on a few plot twists.

10 Kanjuro Was The Traitor

To be fair, no one knew for a fact that Kanjuro was the inevitable traitor of the alliance. However, he was never much of a fan favorite, so much so that some fans were kind of hoping that Kanjuro would betray everyone as his only hope of becoming interesting. On top of that, he never did much after his initial reveal.

As exciting as it was to see him on Dressrosa and as imaginative as his Devil Fruit ability is, Kanjuro was kept at a cautious, narrative distance after his debut, leaving some to suspiciously assume that Eiichiro Oda was trying to lower people’s guards.

9 Law Aligning Himself With Luffy

When Trafalgar Law debuted for the first time after the time skip, he had all the pomp and circumstance of a shock, villain reveal. As the Straw Hats started to explore Punk Hazard’s mysterious happenings, Law stepped forward from the shadows as not only one of Caesar Clown’s underlings but as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea.

While Oda did his best to make it seem as if Law had joined the bad guys, no one believed for a second that the guy who spent hours saving Luffy’s life was going to betray him, even after he switched everybody’s bodies (which, in hindsight, wasn’t even that bad). At this point in the story, no one was going to buy the series’ new, edgy bad boy as anything but Luffy’s future friend (especially given Luffy’s exceptional leadership).

8 Doflamingo Didn’t Give Up His Warlord Status

One Piece 10 Plot Twists That Everyone Saw Coming

After Trafalgar Law helped the Straw Hats on Punk Hazard, he revealed his grand plot to take down both the Emperor, Kaido, and Donquixote Doflamingo in one fell swoop. Part of his plan involved forcing Doflamingo to throw away his own Warlord status so that the Marines wouldn’t protect him when Kaido started looking for him.

However, this wouldn’t be a very good story if everything went according to plan; and given how devious Doflamingo has been, not many fans were actually willing to believe that he’d give up his backup that easily. While the reveal was pretty grandiose, everyone already knew that Doflamingo was going to have the upper hand throughout this arc.

7 Sanji Was A Prince

Ever since the Skypeia Arc, there were rumors going around that Sanji had much more to his backstory than what was revealed on the Baratie; and after his first, New World bounty poster was revealed, many were shocked to find that it said “Alive” instead of “Dead or Alive” but were incredibly ready to put the pieces together.

While some fans were still, pleasantly surprised by the reveal, One Piece’s more dedicated fanbase who love to dissect every detail and form fan theories passed around notes connecting Sanji’s North Blue heritage and his new wanted poster to some sort of royal connection.

6 Luffy Surviving Buggy’s Public Execution

There have been several instances across One Piece where Oda has teased Luffy’s untimely demise. And while it’s healthy for a story to give its major obstacles and villains some weight, no one ever truly believes that Oda is going to get rid of his star player partway through the series.

No one believed it when Crocodile left him in a ditch, Rob Lucci sent shock waves through his body, or when Magellan coated him in poison. If people weren’t going to believe mainline villains were going to kill Luffy, they certainly weren’t going to believe that Buggy the Clown was going to during the Loguetown Arc. While the actual save was plenty surprising, everyone knew that the guillotine was never going to connect.

5 Usopp Getting Observation Haki

While the “when” was always going to be a surprise, there were always some murmurs that Usopp was going to get Observation Haki. After the power was revealed in detail, fans were quick to see which of their favorite characters were going to get a boost after the time skip. The obvious choices were going to be Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji, but the real challenge came with the rest of the Straw Hats.

While it’s hard to imagine characters like Chopper or Brook having Armament or Conqueror’s Haki, Usop seemed like a shoo-in for Observation Haki. It just makes thematic sense that the king of all snipers would have the ability literally based on “observation.”

4 The World Government Is Corrupt

When One Piece debuted, it came off the page with the rhetoric that pirates were bad and that the Marines were the heroes. Though it would’ve been interesting to see a story about a pirate villain, the Straw Hats are unambiguously the heroes of the story. And, as the story has revealed bit by bit, the Marines and the entire World Government are the underlying villains.

While the story could’ve spun the World Government’s corruption as a greater conspiracy, people from the get-go were already buying into the fact that they were the bad guys. With Marines such as Morgans, Fullbody, and Nezumi being some of the fans’ first introduction to the Marines, the infiltration of Water Seven and the attacks on Ohara and Flevance were never too surprising (yet still utterly horrifying).

3 Dr. Hogback Was Evil

One Piece 10 Plot Twists That Everyone Saw Coming

In one of One Piece’s weirdest story arcs, anyone and everyone with eyes could see that something sinister was afoot. No story that involves getting lost in some fog and stepping into a graveyard ever heads into an optimistic direction. However, there was always some doubt, especially once Dr. Hogback debuted.

When he showed up, Tony Tony Chopper, a member of the Cowardly Trio, couldn’t help but look at the man with joy and admiration. In Chopper’s studies, Dr. Hogback was a miracle doctor who advanced medical science like no one else before. While it would’ve been great to see Chopper learn from one of his heroes, fans everywhere could see the writing on the wall given that spooky mansions and the word “doctor” have a tepid history in fiction.

2 Sabo Was Alive

One Piece 10 Plot Twists That Everyone Saw Coming

When the Straw Hats entered the New World, no fan was thinking that Luffy had two, dead brothers. Even though Portgas D. Ace had a pretty, unambiguous death, the same couldn’t be said for Sabo. After witnessing Luffy’s backstory and Sabo’s unfortunate accident, fans left with both tears and some excitement. believing that a new character was going to show up very soon.

Before Dressrosa, everyone already knew that Sabo was alive. They were just waiting to see Luffy’s face (which was pretty iconic) when he saw the ASL member for himself.

1 Kaido Betraying Orochi

Two villains working together hardly ever end with a peaceful and functional alliance all the way through. While many fans are still waiting for Kaido’s rivalry with Big Mom to heat up, many could already tell that their alliance made Orochi the odd man out. As terrifying as it was to think that the Straw Hats were going up against both Kaido and Wano’s shogun, plenty of people were already guessing that Kaido was going to try to take all of Wano for himself.

The Emperors wouldn’t be Emperors if they just compromised their way into having territories. This is the Great Pirate Era, and those at the top of the world are those who have taken the most. When Kaido chopped off Orochi’s head (or, at least, one of them), fans were excited but weren’t too surprised.
