The popularity of Netflix’s Outer Banks almost guarantees it a second season. If it gets one, here’s what fans think should be explored.

Netflix has premiered many new films and series during the coronavirus lockdown, including the original series Outer Banks. The beach-set teen mystery instantly gained millions of fans following its April release. Though a second season hasn’t been confirmed yet, the creators have been talking about it as if it’s a given.

The show’s popularity and its viewership rank on the streaming service almost guarantee a second season. If it does go ahead, a few things need to be explored in more detail. Season 1 introduced many characters and subplots, but the ten episodes simply aren’t enough to properly explore them all. Here are ten things season 2 of Outer Banks should explore.

10 Rafe And Kiara

Though these two characters don’t spend much time together onscreen, an unmistakable tension hangs between them. When Kiara goes to buy some sodas for a movie she’s seeing with Pope and JJ, Rafe catches her at the counter.

She seems weirded out by his advance and doesn’t hold back on showing him how much she dislikes him. It might be important to note that he calls her “Kie” and not by her full name. These two undoubtedly have a complicated past, but the show’s first season didn’t reveal anything to viewers apart from this short scene.

9 Class

The show’s premise is that the island’s two main classes are constantly at war. The financially disadvantaged social group has been dubbed the Pogues, while the wealthier inhabitants are known as the Kooks.

While viewers know the two classes don’t get along, the series hasn’t really delved into the history of this. The discrimination must have some sort of origin, and the first season sprinkled a few hints here and there that something more about the classes lies beneath the surface. Classism is such a prevalent issue in the real world that it’s important to explore in media.

8 JJ’s Family

Not much is known about JJ’s family. The only family member introduced in season 1 is his abusive father. His mother is mentioned briefly, but it would be interesting to learn more about JJ’s roots.

JJ’s background is left ambiguous, but it has to have contributed to the way he’s grown up and the way his father is. JJ is such a mysterious character, the majority of whose true personality is beyond what viewers and his fellow characters see him present to the world.

7 Pope’s Future

Of all the Pogues, Pope is the only one whose loyalty ever wavers. This stems from his father’s controlling parenting, but also Pope’s ambitions to become a coroner.

With the characters’ immediate futures so uncertain at the end of season 1, Pope could swing either way. The brighter future he wants for himself is almost within reach, but so is the wealth and glory the Pogues dream of.

6 John B’s Family

John B’s family is just as complicated as JJ’s. Though his father is dead, John B’s uncle is still unaccounted for. He is mentioned regularly in season 1, so it would be surprising if he doesn’t appear at some point in the show.

John B’s mother is another missing family member of the Rutledge family. In the first episode, John B tells viewers that his mom ran off when he was three, and the last he heard she was in Colorado. She could also potentially show up at some point.

5 Everyone’s Mothers

Though this could be a coincidence, it seems a little strange – or perhaps convenient – that many of the teens’ mothers are either dead, missing, or absent. John B and JJ are only two of the characters whose mothers aren’t around.

Kiara’s mother barely appears in the first season and she seems closer with her father; Pope is in a similar situation. Sarah’s mother isn’t even referred to, except when she tells Rose she isn’t her mother. Why the maternal figures of the series are pushed aside is a mystery that might have more to it than the gold.

4 Consequences For Ward Cameron

At the end of season 1, Ward is left under suspicion when his conversation with John B is overheard by the cops and special forces. Unless he miraculously escapes from the authorities’ grasp once again, he will need to come up with an elaborate lie or own up to his actions.

He’s still the main threat to John B and Sarah as they embark on their quest to start a new life. Since he’s one of the main characters, he’ll probably have to stick around for a while, but many fans are hoping he will be punished as he deserves. The way his position as Kook king could be affected should be interesting to see unfold.

3 Kiara And Sarah

After building up to the grand reveal, the reason provided for Kiara and Sarah’s falling out is a bit anticlimactic. According to John B, they were best friends in the ninth grade, but ever since have refused to even acknowledge each other’s presence.

Surely there’s more to the story than Sarah not inviting Kiara to her birthday party. Both girls are clever and logical most of the time, so this petty reason doesn’t seem entirely believable. Learning more about their past and seeing more of them supporting each other in season 2 would be exactly what the male-dominant show needs.

2 Kiara’s Kook Year

To further expand on the point above, Kiara’s Kook year – as her friends call it – is referred to many times but never explored in detail. Much of Kiara’s past is kept secret, hopefully, because it will be further developed in future seasons should the show get renewed.

Kiara often expresses her strong opinions on environmentalism and human rights. She also hates that she’s technically a Kook, and at Midsummers she accuses her parents of being tone-deaf for forcing her to attend the party. Her complex background could potentially add an extra layer to her arc.

1 Rafe’s Punishment

No matter how sympathetic viewers may feel towards this villain, Rafe’s actions cannot be excused. In season 1, he’s a recurring character who plays a major role in the way events play out.

Hopefully, viewers will get the chance to see more of him in a second season because his tormented character could bring a lot to the show. His relationships with his family members are all unique and nuanced, but not something that is prioritized in the first season. More importantly, how will Rafe deal with the consequences of his actions moving forward?
