Peacemakers Most Shocking Kill Proved He Could Destroy America

Protecting peace at any cost is the mission of Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, but his methods may be doomed to fail if one particular comic is any indication. In a story that requires him to make one of the hardest kills of his career, Smith risks everything by making the president his next target. The result shows the true futility of attaining peace through violence.

Created in 1966 by Joe Gill and Pat Boyette, Peacemaker made his first appearance in Charlton Comics’ Fightin’ 5. The character was later acquired by DC after the purchase of Charlton in 1983 before being integrated into the DC Universe with his own self-titled miniseries in 1988. Before his debut at DC, Alan Moore’s Watchmen started as a proposal to bring Peacemaker and other Charlton heroes into the DC canon. While Watchmen remains an independent tale, Moore’s initial idea set the stage for a Peacemaker story years later that would challenge the soldier’s mission for peace.

Grant Morrison’s epic The Multiversity miniseries examined several alternate Earths in the New 52 era of DC Comics. One featured story of the series, The Multiversity: Pax Americana by Morrison and Frank Quitely, was set on Earth-4 and populated by the characters who were retooled into the cast of Watchmen. The story also references Moore’s work in other ways, such as utilizing a grid pattern layout and incorporating non-linear storytelling. With a mystery involving a presidential assassination, an algorithm that can predict the future, and costumed heroes struggling to remain relevant, Pax Americana honors Watchmen while firmly standing on its own. Central to the story, of course, is Smith, who has gone further than ever before in his quest for peace. Opening with the gory aftermath of the presidential assassination playing in reverse, the shot that has thrown the world into chaos is revealed to have come from Peacemaker himself.

While seemingly in opposition to Peacemaker’s goals, it’s revealed over the course of the story that Smith was drafted into this assassination by the very man he killed. In an attempt to save America from itself, President Hartley coordinated with Peacemaker and Captain Atom to stage a death and resurrection to give his country the savior figure that could bring the peace it needs. His plan fails and instead, Smith is arrested and disgraced while the world falls to chaos and America is handed over on a silver platter to its darkest elements. The idea that Peacemaker could save his world with such a bold action speaks to his commitment to his vision, but the reality that follows shows why Peacemaker’s methods cannot attain it.

As a man of action, Smith is the first to jump when given orders, truly believing in whatever mission he’s been assigned. Unfortunately, he leaves critical thinking behind, and had Peacemaker taken a moment to think the plan through, or just listened to his wife’s apprehensions, he would have avoided making his world a much more violent place. The idea of “peace by any means necessary” is shown to be a failed ideal for the Earth-4’s Chris Smith and, very likely, would be the fate of any Peacemaker.

Peacemaker is prepared to fight for his country and do whatever needs to be done to protect it. While a valiant ideal, Smith’s commitment to immediate, lethal action doesn’t leave room for the contradiction of creating peace through violence, or the possibility that death will only lead to more death. Peacemaker lacks the insight he’d need to truly save his country, but thanks to his zealotry and deadly skill, he’s capable of instigating chaos that could destroy it.
